JACKSONVILLE —

The Troup Tigers, Brook Hill Guard and Alto Yellowjackets will be carrying the torch for Cherokee County and Southern Smith County as the opening round of the state playoffs will take place Friday night for the trio of schools.

Troup ended the regular season Friday by slamming Sabine, 40-30, as the Tiger offense racked up 404 total yards.

The Tigers (6-4) will take on 10-0 Newton in a Class 2A, Region III tilt. Kick-off is set for 7:30 p.m. Friday at Abe Martin Stadium in Lufkin.

The Eagle defense has allowed just under 13 points a game during the regular season and be a formidable task for the Tiger offense to engage.

Brook Hill had an open date last Friday and should be well rested when the travel to Fort Worth to battle Fort Worth Christian (7-3) at 7:30 Friday at Fort Worth's Dorothy and Gene Barrow Field.

The Guard will carry a 6-4 slate into the TAPPS, Division II bi-district test.

For the second year in a row the Yellowjackets of Alto will square off against the Harleton Wildcats in a Class A-I, Region II opening round contest.

The two teams will also play at the same venue — Bruce Bradshaw Stadium in New London — as last year.

Both outfits will bring 7-3 records into the game.

The Yellowjackets won last year's meeting, 35-9.
