LUBBOCK —

Former Bullard High School standout, Minta Spears, poured in a career-high 16 points Wednesday evening to ignite Texas Tech to a 64-56 win over New Mexico at United Spirit Arena.

Spears, a red shirt freshman, went 8-for-8 from the charity line in the game as the Lady Raiders improved to 2-0 on the year while handing New Mexico (1-1) its first loss of the season.

“I always view free throws like I have to make them,” Spears said. “In the end, I always remember the ones I miss, especially if it's a close game.”

Spears, a three point shooting ace back in her high school days in Bullard, canned the first triple of her collegiate career early in the contest during an 11-1 opening run by the Lady Raiders.

The Lady Raiders, who continue their home stand at 2 p.m. Sunday when Arizona State comes to town, led 27-16 after the opening 20 minutes of play.

Amber Battle had a double-double (17 points, 14 rebounds) for the winners.
