JACKSONVILLE —

For the first five minutes of Friday's game between Jacksonville and Gilmer, the No. 2-ranked team in Class 3A, it looked like it could possibly be a homecoming to remember for a long, long time for Indian fans.

At the end of the night, however, things took a grim turn for the worse, making the evening one to forget for Jacksonville followers.

After the Tribe took an early 7-0 lead on a 9-yard touchdown run by Trent Sansom, the Buckeyes proceeded to steamroll the Tribe, scoring 54-straight points in route to whipping the Indians 60-20 before a large Tomato Bowl crowd.

Gilmer (3-0) led 47-7 at intermission, with the second half mercifully played under a continuous running clock.

The 40-point Buckeye win was Gilmer's worst victory over Jacksonville (0-3) since the Orange and Black shutout the Indians 40-0 in 1957.

Jacksonville scored twice in the second half to finish on somewhat of a positive note, while holding the Buckeyes to just a single score in the final-two segments.

Claude Franklin hauled in a 20-yard touchdown pass from Carter McCown in the third quarter that cut Gilmer's advantage to 54-14, following the PAT by Ryan Travis.

Jacksonville's last touchdown came late in the fourth period when Braylon Parish danced in from two yards out. An errant snap prevented Travis from having a shot a connecting on the PAT.

Gilmer had its way with the young Indians as the Buckeyes piled up 482 to 224 total yards.

Buckeye quarterback Tanner Barr tossed four touchdown passes on the night while going 14-18-0 for 272 yards.

Desmond Pollard led Gilmer in receiving, hauling down five catches for 105 yards and two touchdowns.

Jacksonville's Datavion Thacker carried nine times for a team-high 54 yards before being forced to the sideline with a leg injury in the third quarter.

Jacksonville hits the road next week when the Indians visit Henderson, who fell to Hallsville on Friday and are also winless on the year.
