Lady Jaguar basketball squad goes 5-1 in first scrimmages

JACKSONVILLE — If the regular season opened today, the Jacksonville College women's basketball team would be ready to go.

Head coach Lynn Nabi's ladies went 5-1 in weekend scrimmages, the first action that the team has encountered against actual opponents this season.

“We played the right way this weekend and that was good to see,” Nabi said. “I can't name one or two players that had outstanding games because what we saw was truly a total-team effort.

“The big surprise for us as coaches was when we substituted, we didn't lose much at all, everyone did their part, and I'm real excited about that.”

JC played six halves, or abbreviated games, over the weekend and posted a 5-1 record.

On Friday in Frisco, the Lady Jags downed a good Seminole (Okla.) State team by single digits before trouncing Carl Albert (Okla.) State.

In the last game of the day, the JC women had an easy time with the Lady Pioneers form Western Oklahoma.

The Purple and White played in a jamboree in Carrollton on Saturday, and although the competition was much stiffer, the wins still rolled in for the Lady Jags.

JC forged out a double-digit win over Temple Junior College and escaped with a single-digit verdict over Southern-Shreveport.

In a game against Weatherford College, the Lady Coyotes ruled the first segment, but the Lady Jags bounced back to win the second half.

“We made some mistakes in the first half against a good and talented Weatherford team that you just can't afford to make,” Nabi said. “But we learned quick and got things fixed and came out in the final half to beat them.

“I think we found out that this team learns quick, and that they are smart and are good listeners.”

Overall Nabi said that his gut instinct was a positive one in regard to what he saw form his club last weekend.

“It's early, but I've been doing this for a long time and I sense that we are solid,” he said. “We still have some time to get better though.”

The JC ladies visit Eastern Oklahoma, coached by former JC assistant coach Amber Taylor, at 10 a.m. Saturday in their next pre-season action.
