High School Volleyball: Rusk to visit Brook Hill tonight

BULLARD —

With the exception of Jacksonville, who have an open date this evening, a full slate of non-conference volleyball action is on tap for tonight.

Highlighting tonight's card is a match that will feature the Lady Eagles of Rusk traveling to Brook Hill to take on the Lady Guard.

Rusk advanced to the consolation final of the Marshall/ETBU Tournament over the weekend, while the Lady Guard gave a good account at the Eustace Tournament.

Rusk, under first year head coach Cheryl Parsley, features a balanced scoring attack that features Shayla Townsend, Emily Price and Kelsey Blankinship while Brook Hill usually relies on its 6-foot-5 hitter, Sam Anderson, for most of its offensive production.

Rusk and Brook Hill both have claimed 3-0 wins over Jacksonville this year, so a competitive match is expected at the Herrington Sports Center.

The night will get under way at 4:30 p.m. With the 9th-grade match, which will be followed by a junior varsity competition.

Just down the road at Bullard High School, the Lady Panthers will host Class 2A's No.9-ranked team, in New Diana.

Bullard wrapped up the Overton Tournament on a strong note Saturday by going 2-1, while New Diana, who also played in the Overton Tournament, ran its overall record to 7-2 on the year.

Troup's Lady Tigers (4-3) will look to get back on the winning track after dropping a 3-1 decision to Bullard on Friday.

The Lady Tigers will travel to Van this evening for a 6 p.m.date against the Lady Vandals.

Troup will not return home until a Sep. 6 match against Beckville as a difficult portion of the Lady Tigers' pre-district docket is slated to continue.

One would probably be hard pressed to find any summer youth sports camp with a more streamlined approach than was found at the Jacksonville Fightin' Maiden Basketball camp, which took place this week at the Jacksonville High School Gymnasium.

“We just asked the young ladies for two things,” Tony Harris, Jacksonville High School head girl's basketball coach, stated on Wednesday. “First, we wanted them to have fun and secondly we wanted them to learn control — to be able to control their eyes, their body and the (opposing) defender.”
