Rusk Eagles (0-0) at Terrell Tigers (0-0)
7:30 p.m., Friday at Terrell Memorial Stadium
Coaches: Ted Patton, Rusk; Kevin Wilson, Terrell
Next Game: Sep. 6, Rusk at Crockett; Terrell at Dallas Carter
Quick Take: There's only one way for the Tigers to go and that's up after finishing 0-10 a year ago, including a 47-8 loss to Rusk...Terrell returns 10 on the offensive side, including QB Cameron Smith and WR Damon Moss, who made the 10-4A All-District team...The Eagles' strength at this point is its newly created “Black Wall” defense, which did a commendable job in a scrimmage last week against state-ranked (Class 2A) Tatum...Game shaping up to be a test of Terrell's experienced offense against what has been a stingy Eagle defense thus far.
Bullard Panthers (0-0) at Quitman Bulldogs (0-0)
7:30 p.m. Friday at Bert Moody Stadium
Coaches: Shannon Wilson, Bullard; Rod Callahan, Quitman
Next Game: Sep. 6 Bullard vs. White Oak; Quitman at Redwater
Quick Take: The Panthers' running game looked to be in mid-season form in a scrimmage win over Class 4A Jacksonville last week...Brent Henderson rushed for 13 yards a carry during the live portion of the dress rehearsal, with QB Connor Mebane peeling off some nice runs out of the option formation also...Quitman went winless in non-district last season and that fact doesn't appear likely to change this week as the Bullard offense appears to have a decisive advantage in this one.
Quinlan-Ford Panthers (0-0) vs. Troup Tigers (0-0)
7:30 p.m. Friday at Herrington Stadium, Bullard (Brook Hill Classic)
Coaches: Todd Wallace, Quinlan-Ford; Dennis Alexander, Troup
Next Game: Sep.6 Quinlan-Ford at Nevada Community; Troup at West Rusk
Quick Take: The Panthers will send an experienced team — 21 of the 35 players are seniors —into battle in this one...Ford advanced to the Area round in the Class 3A playoffs in 2012...Jon Humphries (5-11, 185) is a two-way Panther starter at RB and LB and he could spell trouble for Troup...Tigers will need a good effort in this one to avoid an upset...Troup won by a touchdown last year, look for another close one.
Frankston Indians (0-0) at Brook Hill Guard (0-0)
7:30 p.m. Thursday at Herrington Stadium in Bullard (Brook Hill Classic)
Coaches: Matt Nally, Frankston; Bobby Brasher, Brook Hill
Next Game: Sep. 6 Brook Hill (open date); Elkhart at Frankston
Quick Take: Bobby Brasher era begins at Brook Hill, so look for Guard to go all out to try to send their new coach to the winners circle at first asking...Guard lost significant amount of talent to graduation and are not the same team as last year, but the winning tradition is definitely alive and well under Brasher, who served as an assistant under former Brook Hill head coach Terry Pirtle...Guard will have to keep the Indians' passing combo of QB Ozzie Buckner to WR Kendrick Rogers in check to have a chance at victory...Brook Hill won big last year, so revenge factor could play into Frankston's favor.
Elkhart Elks (0-0) at No. 2 Alto Yellowjackets (0-0)
7:30 p.m. Friday at Yellowjacket Stadium
Coaches: Sam Wells, Elkhart; Paul Gould, Alto
Next Game: Elkhart at Frankston; Alto vs. Groveton
Quick Take: Fans should look forward to witnessing a couple of the area's top rushers in action as Alto's Jacolby Whitaker and the Elks' Jeffery Wilson are set to square off...These two combined for just over 5,000 yards on the ground in 2012...Alto's supporting cast appears to be stronger than Elkhart's...Coach Gould, a Jacksonville High graduate, to make his debut as Mean Sting bench boss...Look for 'Jackets to come out firing on all cylinders this week..Should be the first of many Alto wins this season.
