High School Football Week 0: Area Roundup

Rusk, Bullard hit the road; Tigers to face a tough Quinlan-Ford unit

Rusk Eagles (0-0) at Terrell Tigers (0-0)

7:30 p.m., Friday at Terrell Memorial Stadium

Coaches: Ted Patton, Rusk; Kevin Wilson, Terrell

Next Game: Sep. 6, Rusk at Crockett; Terrell at Dallas Carter

Quick Take: There's only one way for the Tigers to go and that's up after finishing 0-10 a year ago, including a 47-8 loss to Rusk...Terrell returns 10 on the offensive side, including QB Cameron Smith and WR Damon Moss, who made the 10-4A All-District team...The Eagles' strength at this point is its newly created “Black Wall” defense, which did a commendable job in a scrimmage last week against state-ranked (Class 2A) Tatum...Game shaping up to be a test of Terrell's experienced offense against what has been a stingy Eagle defense thus far.

Bullard Panthers (0-0) at Quitman Bulldogs (0-0)

7:30 p.m. Friday at Bert Moody Stadium

Coaches: Shannon Wilson, Bullard; Rod Callahan, Quitman

Next Game: Sep. 6 Bullard vs. White Oak; Quitman at Redwater

Quick Take: The Panthers' running game looked to be in mid-season form in a scrimmage win over Class 4A Jacksonville last week...Brent Henderson rushed for 13 yards a carry during the live portion of the dress rehearsal, with QB Connor Mebane peeling off some nice runs out of the option formation also...Quitman went winless in non-district last season and that fact doesn't appear likely to change this week as the Bullard offense appears to have a decisive advantage in this one.

Quinlan-Ford Panthers (0-0) vs. Troup Tigers (0-0)

7:30 p.m. Friday at Herrington Stadium, Bullard (Brook Hill Classic)

Coaches: Todd Wallace, Quinlan-Ford; Dennis Alexander, Troup

Next Game: Sep.6 Quinlan-Ford at Nevada Community; Troup at West Rusk

Quick Take: The Panthers will send an experienced team — 21 of the 35 players are seniors —into battle in this one...Ford advanced to the Area round in the Class 3A playoffs in 2012...Jon Humphries (5-11, 185) is a two-way Panther starter at RB and LB and he could spell trouble for Troup...Tigers will need a good effort in this one to avoid an upset...Troup won by a touchdown last year, look for another close one.

One of the main things I really look forward to in the summer is locating and catching schooling bass. Schooling bass are not always easy to catch. Sometimes they are very aggressive and will react to a variety of baits. At other times they become very hard to catch. I have several baits that I rely on, but some are favorites.
