Rusk shows improvement in close loss to Crockett

In a game that was much closer than the final score indicated, Crockett rans it record to 2-0 by coming from behind late to beat Rusk 22-14 at Monte Jack Driscoll Stadium in Crockett Friday evening.

The Eagles (0-2) gave a much better account against Crockett than they did in a loss last week to Terrell.

The Red and Black got on the board first and led 7-0 early on before the Bulldogs tied the game, 7-7, going into intermission.

Each team then doubled their respective points in the third period, with Rusk's touchdown being earned when Chris Sanchez fell on a fumble in the end zone after DJ Glenn had raced 45 yards before fumbling the ball near the goal line after being stripped of the pigskin by Crockett's JaMarcus Moten.

After Sanchez hit the PAT, the score was knotted at 14.

That's where things stood until Crockett took the lead for good on a safety that came with about seven minutes to go in the game and gave the Bulldogs a 16-14 edge.

A 4-yard scamper to pay dirt by Bulldog quarterback Case Robinson that took place with 2:57 to play turned out to be the icing on the cake for the home team as Crockett upped its record to 2-0 after defeating Lexington, 35-34, a week ago.

Morgan Johnson and Garrett Ault teamed up to block the final PAT try by Crockett.

Rusk's defense turned in another noteworthy effort against an explosive Bulldog team — the Eagles sacked the Crockett quarterback six times in the game.

The Eagles will play at Eagle Stadium for the first time in 2013 when they welcome Eustace to town for a 7:30 p.m. contest on Friday.

One would probably be hard pressed to find any summer youth sports camp with a more streamlined approach than was found at the Jacksonville Fightin' Maiden Basketball camp, which took place this week at the Jacksonville High School Gymnasium.

“We just asked the young ladies for two things,” Tony Harris, Jacksonville High School head girl's basketball coach, stated on Wednesday. “First, we wanted them to have fun and secondly we wanted them to learn control — to be able to control their eyes, their body and the (opposing) defender.”
