The Eagles of Rusk had no trouble collecting hits on Monday night, but getting runs across the dish proved to be a struggle.
Although out hit 11-9 by the Eagles, Athens punched out an 8-3 decision over the Red and Black in a warm-up game that was played at Eagle Park.
Rusk broke into the scoring column first and led 1-0 after two innings of play.
Athens then exploded for six runs in the top of the third segment, to break the game wide open.
Jadarian Skinner led the Eagles (16-14) at the plate.
Skinner collected three hits in the game, while Drew Walley and Reece Goldsberry had a pair of safeties apiece.
Walley also was credited with a RBI.
Josh Raiborn got the start on the mound and pitched five innings, while striking out four Hornets.
Michael Crews pitched an inning of relief and struck out three hitters.
Both Rusk and Athens received first round byes after winning their respective district championships. The Eagles and the Hornets will open Class 3A, Region III Area play late next week against opponents to be determined.
