NJCAA Women's Tennis Championships: Lady Jags post several wins on Day 3
TUCSON — In Day 3 action Tuesday of the NCAA Women's Tennis Championships, four Jacksonville College ladies advanced into the semi-finals of the consolation bracket. In Flight 1 singles, Maria Coronel stopped Julia Marcenco (8-0) of Mesa Community College. Kerri Kirkpatrick won her Flight 3 match, downing Erica Richardson of Hartford Community College, 8-6. JC's Britney Sibley and Ashley Hermis came up short of victory in Flight 2 and Flight 6 singles action. The JC women also posted a win in Flight 3 doubles where Troup product Caitlin Renson and Kailia Parker downed Jones Community College's Stuart & Walker, 8-1. JC head coach Mark Robbins said that he was pleased with the way his squad performed Tuesday and was optimistic towards one or more entries advancing into the finals of the back draw. The tournament, which is being played at the Jim Reffkin Tennis Center in Tucson, is scheduled to wrap up today.
Class 3A Area Baseball: Panthers and Hawks to meet at ETBU
MARSHALL — Bullard's Panther nine will take on Texarkana Pleasant Grove in a best-of-3 Class 3A, Region II Area series, which is slated to get under way at 6 p.m. Friday at East Texas Baptist University in Marshall. The Panthers, who beat Van 4-3 in bi-district last week to advance, are 22-6 on the year under the direction of head coach Judd Guidry. Game 2 will be played in Marshall at 1 p.m. Saturday, and if a third contest is needed it will take place 30 minutes after the end of Game 2. The Hawks are the defending Class 3A state champions.
Class 2A Area Baseball: Troup to take on Central Heights
KILGORE — Fresh off of a two-game sweep over Tatum in bi-district last weekend the Tigers of Troup will now face Central heights in a Class 2A best-of-3 Area series. The opener will begin at 7 p.m. Friday, with game 2 to follow at 1 p.m. Saturday. If a Game 3 is required, it will be played at 5 p.m. Saturday. All action will be played at Driller Park in Kilgore. The Tigers will bring a 20-6 record into the game. The Blue Devils are the 19-2A district champions.
Troup boy's golf team finishes 8th at state
AUSTIN — The Troup Tiger golf squad combined for a two-day total of 729, which put the Tigers in eighth place in the team standings of the Class 2A State Golf Championship, which was held at the Roy Kizer Golf Course in Austin late last week. Holliday won the state title by coming in at 687. Travis Young was the top finisher for the Tigers. Young finished at 171. Austin Chambers carded a 175, Callen Eastman wound up at 187, with Dakota Boyer and Cody Johnson rounding things out for Troup, at 196 and 207, respectively.
