GRAND PRAIRIE — TAPPS 3A Softball Regional: Brook Hill falls to Fort Worth Calvary

GRAND PRAIRIE — The Brook Hill Lady Guard softball team dropped a 10-6 decision to Fort Worth Calvary in a TAPPS 3A regional game that took place in Grand Prairie Wednesday night. The Lady Guard end the year with an 8-6 record. Head coach Anthony Springer said that he has high hopes for next season as the Lady Guard are scheduled to lose only one player, Alyssa Eden, to graduation. Calvary advances into the the upcoming state tournament with the win.

2A Softball Reg. Qtr. Final: Troup to face district rival Harmony

LONGVIEW — Troup's playoff march will include a familiar partner this week when the Lady Tigers (27-5-2) open a Class 2A, Region III quarterfinal series with District 18-2A rival Harmony. Game 1 will start at 7 p.m. tonight at Lear Park in Longview, with Game 2 and Game 3, if needed scheduled for Saturday afternoon (1 p.m.) at Lear Park. Bothe teams easily disposed of their respective opponents last week. Troup won an Area series over Central Heights, 2-0, while the Lady Eagles (19-10) swept Woodville. The teams split their games in the regular season, with Troup winning at home, 3-0, and the Lady Eagles chalking up a 4-3 decision on their home soil in Big Sandy. Both teams are extremely young — Harmony has just three seniors while the Lady Tigers have two, Katelyn Standley, a Stephen F. Austin signee, and Ronni Boyer. The winner of the Lady Tiger/Lady Eagle series will take on either Rogers or Crawford in a regional semi-final next week.

Summer soccer camps to be held locally

Three sessions of summer soccer camps will take place at Jacksonville College in the upcoming months. The camps will be under the direction of JC head soccer coach Rafael Gonzalez. Sessions are scheduled for June 10-13, July 8-11 and July 22-25. Soccer skills, fundamentals and teamwork will be emphasized in each session. The enrollment fee is $50 per person.      The summer junior golf tour schedule is now in the home stretch and Jacksonville's Cameron Brown is closing like a freight train.

    Brown played in two tournaments this week and came in third place in each, while going up against some top-caliber junior golfers from the Metroplex.

    On Monday and Tuesday, the son of Dean and Mary Carol Brown, played in a Texas Junior Golf Tour (TJGT) stop at TPC Craig Ranch in McKinney where he shot rounds of 73 and 71 to earn third place out of a field of 54 boys.

    The Rusk Rangers 14U team were scheduled to take on Malakoff Monsters Friday night in an elimination game in the Texas Teen-Age Baseball Association (TTA) state tournament in Hillsboro.

    Rusk suffered its first lost in the double-elimination event after falling to the Eagles from Mildred.

Sometimes they are very aggressive and will react to a variety of baits. At other times they become very hard to catch. I have several baits that I rely on, but some are favorites.

    The Sam Houston State University Bearkats will have a brand new head coach and an unfamiliar quarterback this season.

    But the Southland Conference (NCAA, Football Championship Series) team will return a rock-solid nucleus, including Cory Hamlett, a senior who prepped at Jacksonville High School and Rusk High School graduate John Trotter, who will also be in his final year playing for the orange squad from Huntsville.

    In filling its opening for a head girl's basketball coach, The Brook Hill School turned to Ivan Johnson, a coach that has been has achieved playoff success in TAPPS circles.

    Johnson was introduced as Brook Hill's man to lead the Lady Guard hoop charges Tuesday afternoon in a press conference that was held on campus at the Kyle Lake Athletic Center.
