HOUSTON — Brook Hill successfully defended its TAPPS DIII girls's soccer state title on Friday by slipping past Austin Vertas 1-0 at Awty International School.
Elise Hawkins was the unlikely hero for the Lady Guard. The senior defender scored what turned out to be the only goal of the match around the 12-minute mark of the final period.
The victory also enabled the Lady Guard, coached by David Collins, to complete an undefeated (19-0) campaign in what was only the fourth year that Brook Hill has fielded a girls soccer club.
Brook Hill not only scratched out an unblemished record this season, but they also finished the year with 17-straight shutouts.
About three minutes before Hawkins's game-winning boot, Brook Hill nearly got on the scoreboard via an offensive play when Kennedy Rose lofted a shot that bounced off of the cross bar, which just missed going in.
Austin Vertas ended its season at 22-1.
