NEW ORLEANS, La. —
For the second time this season Callie Collins of University of Texas Arlington (UTA) has been named as the Sunbelt Conference Pitcher of the Week.
Collins, a senior, played high school softball at Rusk High School.
Collins went 2-0 in the circle last week and pitched a pair of complete game victories for the Mavericks.
In a mid-week non-conference outing against Abilene Christian University, Collins limited ACU to two hits while striking out and walking four batters.
UTA breezed to an 8-0 win in that game.
Last Saturday in an SBC game that took place in Arlington against Troy University, Collins went the distance to collect the pitching win.
She gave up one run on two hits, fanned seven and walked three in an 110-pitch effort.
“Callie did a great job of hitting her spots and setting up the hitters this week,” UTA head softball coach, Kristie Fox, said in an interview with utamavs.com. “When she goes out there with confidence, I think she can compete with anyone. She really set the tone for us to go out and win some games.”
Collins is 9-10 on the year and owns a team-best earned run average of 2.82.
She has pitched 134 innings and has given up 125 hits while striking out 126 and issuing 40 base on balls.
The Mavericks are 17-35, 2-9 SBC. UTA hosts Louisiana-Monroe in a doubleheader this evening and a single game that will wrap up the series on Saturday afternoon.
