PITTSBURG, Kan. —
Former Rusk High School standout Chaston Bennett showed glimpses of his old self as he led Tyler Junior College in rushing and to a 47-21 win over Garden City (Kan.) Sunday afternoon in the Football Capitol of Kansas Bowl, played in Pittsburg, Kan.
Bennett tallied 117 yards on 21 carries via the ground, with 116 of that coming in the second half.
Bennett, a true freshman, capped off his day by bursting into the end zone from 20 yards out with 2:42 left in the game, which was TJC's final points of the afternoon.
His performance was his finest while wearing an Apache uniform.
The Apaches outscored the Broncbusters 31-12 in the final half to finish strong.
TJC had command from the start and led 10-0 after one period of play and 27-9 at halftime.
The Apaches did a defensive number on Garden State, holding the Broncbusters to minus-2 yards rushing.
For the game TJC amassed 530 total yards to Garden City's 214.
TJC, who represented the Southwest Junior College Football Conference, ended its season at 9-2, while the Broncbusters concluded 2013 with a record of 2-8. Three of the Kansas school's losses were due to forfeit (use of ineligible player).
Garden City was plagued by turnovers (three fumbles lost and an interception), while TJC made just one mistake in the contest.
