NEW SUMMERFIELD —  Tanya Saurez, New Summerfield's sophomore point guard, gave East Texas Christian Academy fits on both ends of the floor Tuesday night, with the Lady Panthers inability to keep the quick and speedy Saurez in check having a lot to do with New Summerfield being able to etch out a 37-16 decision over the young ladies from Tyler.

The Lady Hornets scored the first 17 points of the game, with ETCA finally breaking the ice at the 6:51 mark of the second quarter when R. Krantz dropped in the first of her team-best six points.

New Summerfield carried a 26-7 into halftime, with Saurez scoring 18 of her points in the opening half.

Defensively Saurez was able to collect steal, after steal, after steal as soon as ETCA brought the ball across the time line, with most of those thefts resulting in easy layups for Saurez, who averages 12 points a game, but has scored more than 20 points in each of New Summerfield's last-two outings.

New Summerfield head coach Brady Sizemore went to his bench early and often and even played several junior varsity players in order to get his Lady Hornets plenty of minutes and to avoid further embarrassment to the visitors.

“We were able to play a lot of kids and get them experience and that is always good,” Sizemore, who is in his first year as Lady Hornet head coach, said. “We are playing in the Central Heights Tournament later this week, so things will get much tougher for us quickly, but we are happy about getting this win.”

Other scorers for the Lady Hornets included Monica Saurez with six points, Isela Zuniga and Karli McCown who added four each and Mi'Chaela Davis, who pitched in two.

Zuniga had a team-high seven rebounds.

New Summerfield forced ETCA to turn the ball over 32 times in the game, with the Lady Hornets surrendering the rock on just 12 occasions..

New Summerfield moved to 3-4 with the win.
