JACKSONVILLE — Junior Tennis: East Texas Circuit tourney coming to town Saturday

The Jacksonville High School Tennis Complex will be the venue for the East Texas Circuit Tournament on Saturday. There will a division for 7-9 graders and another grouping for 10-12th grade participants. Singles, doubles and mixed doubles divisions will be played. Entry fee is $10 per event, with the registration deadline being Thursday. To sign up, phone or text tournament director David Hanna (903) 571-6277. Hanna can be reached by email at dhanna@jisd.org.

Former Guard diamond star has 3 hits in Victoria loss

VICTORIA, Texas — J.B. Moss, a former Brook Hill baseball standout who now plays collegiatly at Texas A&M went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and a pair of RBI in Victoria's 13-8 loss to Brazos Valley Bombers on Sunday. Moss, who is batting .302 for the season, chalked up three singles in the game.  The Generals are now 0-4 in Second Half standings of the Texas Collegiate League. The Bombers, meanwhile, improved to 3-1 with the victory.

PRCA Rodeo: McKnight ends up 4th in St. Paul, Ore.

Saint Paul, Ore. — Wells' Tyler McKnight and team roping partner Tyler Wade of Terrell, ended up tied for fourth place in average (11.1 seconds) at the St. Paul (Ore.) July 4th Rodeo. McKnight and Wade each earned a paycheck in the amount of $2,627 dollars. Winning average with a time of 10.1 were Tate Kirchenschlanger and Will Woodfin. McKnight, 24, is expected to remain out west to participate in other high payout rodeos.

JUCO Womens Basketball: Lon Morris ex transfers to LSU-Shreveport

SHREVEPORT — Former Lon Morris College women's basketball standout Byroneisha Santiago, has transferred from Louisiana-Lafayette (NCAA Division I) to LSU-Shreveport (NAIA). Santiago averaged 20 minutes a game last year at UL-Lafayette where she pumped in an average of 9.6 points and 8.3 rebounds a night. Santiago will have two years of eligibility remaining. LSU-Shreveport went 25-6 overall last year and finished third in the Red River Athletic Conference.

    That's because, county them, four teams from Rusk will be competing at venues around Central and East Texas in various Texas Teenage-Baseball Association state championship tournaments.

    One would probably be hard pressed to find any summer youth sports camp with a more streamlined approach than was found at the Jacksonville Fightin' Maiden Basketball camp, which took place this week at the Jacksonville High School Gymnasium.

    “We just asked the young ladies for two things,” Tony Harris, Jacksonville High School head girl's basketball coach, stated on Wednesday. “First, we wanted them to have fun and secondly we wanted them to learn control — to be able to control their eyes, their body and the (opposing) defender.”
