Both Jacksonville College hoops teams lose latest outings

JACKSONVILLE —

In NJCAA Region XIV basketball action that was played on Saturday, Jacksonville College's teams fell to defeat, with the men dropping an 82-73 decision to Lamar State-Port Arthur at the Curtis Carroll Fieldhouse.

Meanwhile over in Athens earlier in the day the top-ranked Trinity Valley women handed the Lady Jaguars a 92-77 loss.

MEN

The Jags lost for the fourth game in-a-row in their most recent test — JC has ended up on the short end of the scoreboard in six of its last seven outings.

Tre Bennett, III and Anthony Allen propelled the Seahawks (19-4, 9-3 Region XIV) by knocking in 18 and 17 points, respectively.

The Jags (7-15, 2-10) led 39-31 at the break, but were outscored 17 points by Lamar St. in the second half.

The JC men continued to be tied with Bossier Parish (La.), who is also 2-10 in conference, in the quest for the final post-season tournament berth out of the circuit.

The going doesn't get any easier for the Jags, as the JC men must travel to Houston Wednesday to play San Jacinto.

WOMEN

TVCC completed the series sweep over the Lady Jags and ran its record to 22-1, 11-0,while JC fell to fifth place in the league standings.

Shlonte Allen led the Lady Cards with a 22-point night coming off of the bench.

The Lady Jags are now 11-10, 5-5.

On Wednesday the JC women will take on Angelina College for the first time this season when the two clubs collide in Lufkin at 5:30 p.m.

The Dayton Bronco football team, coached by Jowell Howell, a 1985 graduate of Jacksonville High School, has averaged 8.9 wins a season over the last 10 years.

At least one highly respected state-wide prognosticator, PigskinPrep.com, says that will change this year.

In it's preseason review, PigskinPrep.com predicted that the Broncos, an seemingly unceasing playoff participant, will go undefeated — 10-0 — in the regular season in 2014.

Lake Athens is one of the best bass fishing lakes in our area. The lake is about the same size as Lake Jacksonville, with one big exception. Lake Athens is loaded with vegetation of all kinds. Hydrilla, America pond weed and lily pads, just to mention a few. Hydrilla is scattered throughout the lake but is kept under control.
