Rusk 54, Tyler Lee 50: RUSK — A fast start to the 2013-14 season continued Tuesday evening for the Rusk High School girls basketball team with the Lady Eagles coming away with a thrilling, 54-50, decision over Class 5A Tyler Lee. The game was played at Eagle Coliseum. The Rusk girls moved to 3-1 on the year with the win. The Lady Raiders slipped to 1-5 following the loss. The Rusk girls will be playing in the Winona Tournament (Thur.-Sat.).
No. 3 Bullard 63, Gilmer 27: BULLARD — Bridgette Taylor scored 20 points, Lexi Abercrombie pumped in 16 and Lexi Kirgan canned 11 as Bullard, ranked No. 3 in Class 3A in the latest TABC poll, steamrolled Gilmer, 63-27, Tuesday night at Panther Gymnasium. Bullard raced out to a 21-6 lead after the opening eight minutes of play and never looked back. Coach Barry Gill's Lady Panthers are now 11-1 on the year and are 1-0 in 16-3A. Other scorers for Bullard were, Maddy Slayter (8), Taylor Frederick (4), Brittany Hinton (2) and Nikki Johnson (2). In the junior varsity game, Bullard drained eight triples to torch the Lady Buckeyes, 59-21. Hannah Lloyd and Kristen Chamberlain popped in 13 points apiece for the Lady Panthers. Lauren Zachery knocked in 11 and Abby Ehrman scored six. Bullard will be taking part in the Canton Tournament (Thur.-sat.).
No. 2 Martin's Mill 66, Troup 45: BEN WHEELER — Martin's Mill, ranked No. 2 in Class A-I, improved to 6-1 on the year after downing Troup, 55-45, Tuesday. The Lady Tigers played Martin's Mill on even terms in the second and third stanzas, but the Lady Mustangs outscored the Lady Tigers 26-14 in the fourth frame to seal the deal. Josee Ross scored 13 points for Troup and Paeton Nolan tossed in 11.
Winona 67, Brook Hill 19: WINONA — Kawaii Gordon poured in 20 points and hauled down 17 rebounds to pace the Lady Tigers of Winona to a 67-19 victory over Brook Hill on Tuesday. The Lady Guard will be playing in the Hawkins Tournament this weekend.
Bullard 48, Palestine 39: BULLARD — Bullard broke open a game that was knotted at 21 at intermission by winning the third quarter, 18-8, before hanging on to upend the Wildcats of Palestine by a score of 48-39. Hunter Landrum had 12 points to spark Bullard (3-2) and Barb tossed in 10. Bullard will be playing Grace Community (Thur.), Troup (Fri.) and Brook Hill (Sat.) in the Tommy Young Boys varsity Basketball Classic at Brook Hill.
No. 7 Brook Hill 49, White Oak 22: BULLARD — Alex Hale and Grant Hanks combined to score 29 points in Brook Hill's 49-22 blowout victory over White Oak on Tuesday night. Hale led the way with 16 points. Chase McDermott tossed in eight for the winners, who improved to 4-0 on the year. The Guard did a defensive number on the Roughnecks in the second half when Brook Hill held White Oak to just six points. Hanks had Brook Hill's lone trey. The Guard are ranked No. 7 in the TABC TAPPS Private School Small poll. Brook Hill hosts Bullard, Troup and Grace Community in the Tommy Young Boys Varsity basketball Classic (Thur.-Sat.).
Rusk 83, Winona 52: WINONA — The Rusk Eagles spanked Winona, 85-32, Tuesday night on the Tigers' home floor. Next up for the Eagles is the Dairy Queen Invitational in Van. That tournament will wrap up on Saturday.
