Less than thirty days after hiring a new assistant women's basketball coach, Jacksonville College is now in the market for a new men's basketball assistant coach.
Bert Capel has departed JC to take a job as an assistant coach at Stetson University (NCAA, Division I) in Deland, Fla.
At Stetson Capel, who served for one season as the Jaguar assistant under head coach Jody Bailey, will be reunited with Corey Williams, who was named as the new head men's hoops coach at Stetson earlier this month.
Capel and Williams had previously worked together on staff at Florida State University.
“Losing a coach like Coach Capel is a blow,” Bailey said. “But at the same time I'm thrilled that Bert will be able to go back to Florida and coach at the Division I level for someone he knows professionally in Corey Williams.”
Bailey said that JC is currently in the midst of finding the best possible replacement for Capel.
“We're in the process of filling Bert's spot,” Bailey said. “The most important thing is that we find a man that shares our vision for our student athletes at Jacksonville College. I'm confident that that person is out there and that we will find him.”
The Jags have lost two assistant coaches in as many years and while that is tough on a program, according to Bailey, he does not believe that recruiting will be adversely affected at this time.
“We lost Felipe Lilivois (to McMurry University) last year and now we have lost Bert Capel; both are two great guys who have had a lasting impact on our student athletes,” Bailey said. “Most of our recruiting is done at this point and we are just waiting on the final paperwork to be done, so I don't foresee Bert's leaving impacting us negatively in that area.”
