As the old sports saying goes, “sometimes it's better to be lucky than good.”
Lady Luck stayed far away from a trio of Jacksonville High tennis players on Monday as Ellie Day, Samantha Lee and Kristie Savage were in the Metroplex, having qualified for the Class 4A Region II Championship Tournament that was hosted by University Texas Arlington.
“The draw was not kind to Jacksonville,” JHS head tennis coach, David Hanna, said. “Our girls' names were the first ones to be drawn out of the hat at the coaches' meeting, so that meant they each had to play number one seeds (in the opening round).”
Day, playing in girls singles, fell to nationally ranked Chandler Carter of Dallas Highland Park, while Lee & Savage, playing in the doubles bracket, met a similar fate when they were also to hook up with a couple of ranked opponents from Highland Park.
Monday's outcomes not withstanding, Hanna, praised each of his regional qualifiers.
“First, Ellie (Day) closes out her tremendous career here and will move on to Texas A&M in the fall,” he said. “She haas been a great asset to our team and our school, and will be missed.
“Samantha (Lee) and Kristie (Savage) had a great year and gained valuable experience at regionals. We look forward to much more success from them next year.”
