New Summerfield High School's Francisco Parra is a young man consumed with distance.
For example, it's 213 miles from New Summerfield to Austin.
That's an important number because the next time Parra races in the 3200 meters it will be a Mike Myers Stadium at the University of Texas in the UIL Class A Championships, which are scheduled for May 7.
Parra, a junior, secured his invitation by taking first in the regional meet that was staged at Palestine High School on Friday.
Parra, who is coached by Kent Willis, was timed in 10:33, which was fast enough to get him across the finish line before any of the other competitors.
Parra, who also excels in cross country during the fall, will be making his first trip to the state meet.
In November of last year New Summerfield qualified for its first ever UIL Class A State Cross Country Championship Meet, with Parra being an integral part of that squad; so the long road to Texas' capital is a familiar one for both Parra and Willis, who also serves as athletic director at New Summerfield.
