Brook Hill 7th graders end season undefeated; 8th girls take 2nd place

TYLER — The Brook Hill seventh-grade basketball team finished up a undefeated season winning the Tyler Association of Private Schools Athletic Conference this past week at the Brookshire Sports Complex on the All Saints campus.

Campbell Fletcher (16) and Reid Hill (14) combined for 30 of the Guard points in the game. Playing a team role, McKade Marquis controlled the tempo for the Bullard crew.

Marquis finished with 11 rebounds and eight assists, and seven steals while adding five-points and Brook Hill’s lone 3-pointer.

A tough Guard defense held All Saints to single digits in every quarter, leading 18-12 at the half, and a 31-21 cushion going into the final quarter. All Saints got a 3-pointer and a team-high nine-points in the setback for the Trojans.

The Guard earlier in the season won both of the Tyler Independent Schools tournaments to finish undefeated on the year.

In earlier action, the Brook Hill Lady Guard fell to Grace Community in the eighth-grade girls championship game, 39-14.

After earning the finals spot with a win over T.K. Gorman, the Lady Guard had trouble with the Grace Community platoon of players, and eight players in the scorebook.

Grace took a 16-10 at the half and allowed only four points from Brook Hill the final half for the lop-sided score.

Brook Hill guard, and Jacksonville native Lauren Eden led Brook Hill with 6-points.

The tournament concluded the basketball season for both Brook Hill teams.

    For the second time this season Callie Collins of University of Texas Arlington (UTA) has been named as the Sunbelt Conference Pitcher of the Week.

    Collins, a senior, played high school softball at Rusk High School.

    Collins went 2-0 in the circle last week and pitched a pair of complete game victories for the Mavericks.

    Hannah Roper, representing Jacksonville Middle School, won the 8th-grade girls singles championship at the Kilgore Middle School Tournament on Friday while Thomas Brewer came away with the consolation crown in the 7th-grade boys flight.

    And, those success stories were just the tip of the tennis iceberg for JMS.

    The UIL Class 2A state golf tournament would not be complete without the Troup Tigers included in the mix.

    The young men from Troup made sure that they will be in this year's state tournament on April 30-May 1 in Austin by coming in second at the Class 2A Region III Golf Tournament.

    The tourney took place Tuesday at Oak Hurst Golf Course in Bullard.

    As the late afternoon sun slowly dipped below the horizon Tuesday at Faulkner Park in Tyler, there was a soaking-wet head softball coach and a team of excited young Jacksonville Fightin' Maidens that had streaks of white chalk smeared across their faces, uniform tops and pants, milling around the infield, in no hurry to board the team bus for the ride back home.

    Chris Holcomb stroked a three-run triple that traveled to the fence in left field in the third inning, which was a part of a 2 for 3 night, as Jacksonville plastered John Tyler, 11-0, Tuesday in a District 16-4A encounter that was played at Mike Carter Field.

    Racking up three RBI and two runs scored for the Tribe (7-16-1, 2-6 16-4A), Holcomb triggered a six-run third stanza for Jacksonville, with the Indians scoring the remained of their runs in the fifth frame.

    Alto celebrated Senior Night Friday by trampling Wells, 16-1, in a game that featured a no-hitter being thrown by Lady Jacket Madison Crisp.

    Crisp struck out 10 and did not walk a batter in coasting to the win.

    Alto recognized its two seniors, Carenza Johnson and Dariyana Moore, on their special day.
