H. S. Baseball: Brook Hill stopped by No. 12-ranked Central Heights in warm-up contest

BULLARD — Brook Hill wasn't able to go hog-wild and celebrate what would have been head coach Terry Pirtle's 300th-career coaching victory, largely because of the action of a future Hog.

Arkansas Razorback signee,Alex Phillips handcuffed the Guardsmen to only four hits, and added a two-RBI single to lead No. 12-ranked Central Heights to a 2-1, non-district win on Thursday afternoon at Herrington Ball Park.

Errors turned out to be critical as all the scoring in the game were unearned runs that were due to errors.

Brook Hill catcher, Kendall Kerns blasted a lead-off triple in the fourth-inning and came in to score on the throwing error at third base for the Brook Hill lead.

Kerns, recently signed to play next year with Abilene Christian University, went 2 for 3 at the plate, scoring the lone run of the game for Brook Hill.

The wheels came off the wagon defensively for Brook Hill, and reliever, Daniel Priddy in the top of the sixth inning.

Zane Johnson sprinted to first base beat out the first misplay at first base to put one man on with one out for the Blue Devils.

Central Heights, first baseman, Brady Clifton reached base on a Guard throwing error, eventually moving up one base each to set the table for Phillips.

Phillips ripped a single to right field, followed up by another Guard error on the short-hop got away, allowing both runs to score easily, leaving Phillips at second base with a 2-1 lead.

The hard-throwing righty, Phillips struck out eight, Guard batters, walked none, and allowed just four hits in five innings pitched.

Wofford University-bound, Quinton Pile got the start and left the game with a 1-0 lead. Pile struck out eight and walked none, and surrendered six-hits in his five-innings pitched.

Pile also aided his mound cause with a single, however left stranded on base as were six base Guard base runners in the game.

Sophomore, Daniel Priddy took the hard luck loss on the mound, striking out three, walking just one, coming out on the blind side of the Brook Hill run of errors in the field.

TJC-bound, Drew Robertson had the only other hit for Brook Hill in the game.

The setback for Brook Hill comes on the heels of wrapping up another district title, hopeful to end head coach, Terry Pirtle’s, Brook Hill coaching stint with a third-consecutive TAPPS state baseball title.

Brook Hill awaits bi-district, and will play the loser of the Fort Worth-Calvary Christian/Fort Worth-Temple Christian, at Herrington Ball Park, on a date and time to be determined.

Central Heights improves to 20-5 on the season, and will play non-district games against Bridge City on Friday, and Gilmer on Tuesday before they begin bi-district play.

One of the main things I really look forward to in the summer is locating and catching schooling bass. Schooling bass are not always easy to catch. Sometimes they are very aggressive and will react to a variety of baits. At other times they become very hard to catch. I have several baits that I rely on, but some are favorites.
