The Brook Hill Guard will return to the TAPPS Class 3A state title game for a shot to three-peat after disposing of Red Oak-Ovilla Christian, 7-1, on Tuesday at the Waco ISD baseball complex.
Sophomore pitcher, Daniel Priddy was a big part of the win, drawing the start and throwing six innings, striking out ten Eagle batters, walking none and scattering out six hits and allowing the lone Ovilla run, although unearned due to a Guard miscue..
Battery-mate, Kendall Kerns came on to relieve in the seventh inning to finish out the win, allowing two hits.
“It was another great performance by our pitcher Daniel Priddy,” head coach Terry Pirtle said after his 303rd win as a baseball head coach. “And Jonah Gonzales was lights out both at the plate with a huge double, and he made some great plays for us at second base that were really big for us.”
Guard shortstop, Clayton Engel, Quinton Pile, and Gonzales each had two hits for the Guard. Engel scored once and knocked in one run with a double, Pile scored twice and Gonzales had the big two-RBI double and scored once among the 10 hits for the Bullard crew.
Losing pitcher, William Stiinchcomb struck out seven Guard batters, walked three, hit one batter while allowing the ten hit barrage.
Cameron Stephens and Tyler Webb led the Eagles batters with two hits apiece. Ovilla’s, Jackson Glenn singled and scored in the top of the sixth inning for the only run of the game.
Centerfielder, Michael Greening saved any further damage in the inning with two runners on base. Greening made up for a wrong first step on a shot to the left centerfield gap. Greening sprinters speed however ran down the frozen rope and retired the side to keep Priddy looking pretty after his six innings pitched.
“It meant a lot to me that the coaches had the confidence in me to make the start,” said Priddy after the win. “My location was really god early on, and the defense had my back all game long and it was just a great team effort.
“I thought the catch by Michael (Greening) was outstanding,” the pitcher continued. “I think he got a bad break on the ball and I didn’t know if he would get there but he is so fast he made the play that really closed the door on them.”
The Guard will go for the third-straight baseball state title against Bryan-Brazos Christian, at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at Mary Hardin Baylor’s, Red Murphh Stadium for the Class 3A title. Third in-a-row should Brook Hill win.
