NEW SUMMERFIELD —
Workers from Hellas Construction Company of Austin were busy Monday morning installing the polyurethane coating over the asphalt base of the new track at New Summerfield High School (right image). A Hellas spokesman said the project is about a week behind schedule due to recent thunderstorms and, weather permitting, that the firm hopes to have the installation of the coating finished by the end of this week. The next step will involve adding materials that will give the 440-yard running surface its bounce, with the final phase being the addition of striping and graphics.
Bleacher seating and the press box for the new facility, which also will feature a soccer field nestled inside of the 440-yard track, has been wrapped up (center image). Approximately 750 spectators, according to Greg Weiss, New Summerfield Independent School District superintendent, can be comfortably accomodated by the new stadium, which has been selected to host the Red River Athletic Conference (NAIA) Cross Country Championships this fall.
Dirt work has concluded for the Hornet baseball and Lady Hornet softball complex (bottom image), which will be located just northeast of the track and field facility. New Summerfield is expected to field baseball and softball teams for the first time in school history next spring. The teams will compete on the junior varsity level in the upcoming school before diving into varsity competition in the 2014-15 school term.
Currently New Summerfield fields boys and girls varsity teams in basketball, cross country, track and field and tennis.
