Rusk Rangers win TTA tourney opener
BROWNWOOD — The Rusk Rangers opened play in the Texas Teenage Baseball/Softball Association's 8U Machine Pitch State Tournament by taking down the Brownwood Giants on Monday. The Rangers were scheduled to have taken on the Mexia Texans in a winner's bracket game Tuesday. The double-elimination event runs through Friday.
Rusk Orioles tripped up in first round of state tourney
EMORY — Rusk's Orioles were stopped by the Hillsboro Black Hawks in first-round play of the Texas Teenage Baseball/Softball Association's T-Ball State Tournament, which is being staged in Emory. Rusk will play either the BMC Hurricanes or the Rangers of Mineola in an elimination game that is slated for 6 p.m. this evening.
Troup 12U squad blasts Bragg
ENNIS — The Rattlers of Troup got the best of Bragg Appliance Monday night at Bluebonnet Park in Ennis. The game was a second-round — the Rattler's received a first-round bye — affair in the Texas Teenage Baseball/Softball Association State Tournament. After an off day on Tuesday, the Rattlers will face the Edgewood Bulldogs at 5 p.m. tonight.
Bullard-ex Greene continuing second season with Pensacola
PENSACOLA, Fla. — Former Bullard High standout Brodie Greene, now in his second full season with the Pensacola Blue Wahoos of the Class AA Southern League, is hitting .227 through 92 games this season. The second baseman has collected three home runs and has driven in 21 runs. Greene has accumulated 10 doubles and has swiped four bases in six attempts. Pensacola is an affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds.
MLB suspends Braun for remainder of season
NEW YORK (AP) -- Ryan Braun stood on a spring training field and proclaimed he was innocent of using banned testosterone.
''I would bet my life,'' he said back then, ''that this substance never entered my body at any point.''
Seventeen months later, he accepted a 65-game suspension from baseball and admitted, ''I am not perfect. I realize now that I have made some mistakes. I am willing to accept the consequences of those actions.''
The 2011 National League MVP was suspended without pay for the rest of the season and the postseason Monday,
Big 10 football to be featured regularly in Metroplex
DALLAS (AP) -- The Big Ten Conference will have a team in either the Heart of Dallas Bowl or the Armed Forces Bowl each year through the 2019 season.
As part of an extension with the Heart of Dallas Bowl announced Tuesday, the Big Ten will also send teams to the Armed Forces Bowl in Fort Worth, rotating between the two games over a seven-year period.
This season, the Big Ten will play a team from Conference USA in the Heart of Dallas Bowl. That game is on New Year's Day at the historic Cotton Bowl stadium.

Jacksonville's Fightin' Maidens collected a District 35-4A triumph Friday night at Tomato Bowl without even scoring a goal.
Yes that's right, because Lufkin Hudson knocked in the only goal of the match — an own goal — with 12:58 to play in the match.
After the Maidens (7-7-2, 6-2-1 District 35-4A) almost scored on their own, the ball deflected a few feet out in front of the Hudson goalkeeper and in the made rush to clear the ball already Hornet accidentally knocked the ball into the Jacksonville goal.
