NTPGA Jr. Golf: Trio of locals do well in Longview tourney
LONGVIEW — Three-local youth golfers performed well on Wednesday at the NTPGA Junior Tour's Woodhollow (Longview) tour stop. In the boys 15-16 bracket, Cameron Brown of Jacksonville carded a 75 to take fifth place. Jamey Scruggs, representing Troup, was sixth at 80 while Cash Cleaver of Jacksonville finished in a three-way tie for seventh at 81. Texarkana linkster Russell Thomas, age 16, fired an even-par 70 to win the tourney championship.
Rumbelow continues to excel as New York Yankee farm hand
STATEN ISLAND, NY — Nick Rumbelow of Bullard continues to sport a spotless earned run average (0.00) after appearing in six games as a member of the Staten Island Yankees (Class A, New York-Penn League). Rumbelow has tossed seven scoreless frames and has struck out seven while walking just one opposing hitter.. He has a 2-0 record and has picked up a pair of saves since joining the club last month after appearing in the NCAA College World Series as a member of the LSU Tiger baseball team.
SEC Media Days: Aggies to to finish second in West
HOOVER, Ala. — Members of the Southeastern Conference media have selected Texas A&M as the second-place team in the SEC West. The Aggies accumulated 11 first-place votes and 1,333 points to finish second behind Alabama (225, 1,681) in the West, with LSU, Ole Miss and Auburn picked third, fourth and fifth, respectfully. With 149 first-place votes and 1, 570 points the Bulldogs of Georgia nabbed bragging rights in the East Division, with South Carolina (75, 1,474) and Florida (19, 1,300) slotted in the second and third spots.
Big 12 Media Poll: Longhorns picked fourth; TCU third, Baylor fifth
AUSTIN — The Texas Longhorns received eight first-place votes and 337 points to come in fourth place in the Big 12 Pre-Season Media Poll. TCU notched nine first-place votes and earned 347 points to end up third while Baylor's Bears garnered two first-place nods and tallied 282 points to finish one spot behind the 'Horns. Oklahoma State, with 15 first-place agreements and 365 points was forecast to win the conference championship, followed by Oklahoma (8, 355). Texas Tech was pegged to finish seventh by the media representatives.
Troubled Cowboys DT announces retirement
IRVING (AP) — Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Josh Brent retired from football at age 25 on Thursday, saying “doing the right things in life” is more important as he prepares to defend himself against a manslaughter charge in the drunken-driving crash that killed a teammate. Brent said he had “given a lot of thought” to his decision. His football career has been on hold since the Dec. 8 crash that killed Jerry Brown, a practice squad player, college teammate and close friend.
