Prep Hoops Roundup: Jacksonville, Bullard girls perform well in tourney play; Guard rout Tigers



Jacksonville 52 Union Grove 28: HAWKINS - Jacksonville used a huge second quarter to put away Union Grove in first-round action of the Hawkins Tournament on Thursday. The Maidens outscored Union Grove 21-7 in the key segment in route to posting a 52-28 win. Jasmine Parson drained three triples and ended up with 19 points for the Maidens. Monica Franklin was next with seven. Inchantra Kendrick, TaSheena Canady and Iesha Griffin each contributed six points to the winning cause. Canady's points came via two shots from behind the arc.

No. 3 Bullard 61 Athens 19: CANTON - Athens got a double dose of Lexi as Bullard's Lexi Abercrombie finished with 23 points and Lexi Kirgan added 13 in the No. 3-ranked Lady Panthers 61-19 win over Athens in pool play of the Canton Tournament Thursday. Bridgette Taylor put in 13 points for Bullard while Brittany Hinton scored eight.

No. 3 Bullard 66 Chapel Hill 41: CANTON - Bullard completed opening day play in the Canton Tournament by throttling Chapel Hill's Lady Bulldogs, 66-41. Lexi Abercrombie pumped in 24 points and Lexi Kirgan and Bridgette Taylor canned a dozen apiece for the 13-1 Lady Panthers.

Bullard JV 49, Canton 35: CANTON - Tracey Johnson scored a team-high 12 points to guide the Bullard JV team to a 49-35 victory over Canton in the Canton Tournament Thursday.


Brook Hill 54, Troup 35: BULLARD – Behind Grant Hanks' 24-point performance, Brook Hill eased past Troup, 56-35, in opening day play of the Tommy Young Boys Varsity Classic Thursday night at Herrington Gymnasium. Alex Hale delivered 13 points for the Guard and Anfernee Ross popped in 12 for the Tigers. Brook Hill led 12-2 after the first quarter of play.


Bullard 56, Grace Community School 52: BULLARD — Bullard jumped out to a 17-8 lead after the first eight minutes of play and then held off a hard-charging Grace Community Cougars unit Thursday in the Brook Hill-Tommy Young Boys Varsity Classic and eventually pressed out a 56-52 victory. Hunter Landrum tossed in 21 points for the Panthers and Eric Barb added 11, Landrum drained three treys in the game and Zach Eschberger hit two shots from downtown to end up with six points.

    Most of the clubs will take part in scrimmages or playdays in late week before opening the regular season the following week.

     The summer junior golf tour schedule is now in the home stretch and Jacksonville's Cameron Brown is closing like a freight train.

    Brown played in two tournaments this week and came in third place in each, while going up against some top-caliber junior golfers from the Metroplex.

    On Monday and Tuesday, the son of Dean and Mary Carol Brown, played in a Texas Junior Golf Tour (TJGT) stop at TPC Craig Ranch in McKinney where he shot rounds of 73 and 71 to earn third place out of a field of 54 boys.

    The Rusk Rangers 14U team were scheduled to take on Malakoff Monsters Friday night in an elimination game in the Texas Teen-Age Baseball Association (TTA) state tournament in Hillsboro.

    Rusk suffered its first lost in the double-elimination event after falling to the Eagles from Mildred.
