Soccer: Jacksonville girls blank Center; Belk notches first-career varsity goal

CENTER —  Senior Christy Belk, a four-year starter for the Fight'n Maidens, scored her first varsity goal in Jacksonville's 3-0 shutout over Center Tuesday night at Roughrider Stadium.

The Maidens (7-10-1, 4-1 in district) got all of their goals in the opening period before coasting home with the win.Kelly Crosby put the JHS girls on the board first by booting a volley shot into the net, with Kennison Chambless getting the assist on the play.

Jacksonville's second score came on an unassisted goal by freshman Lindsey Green.

Green also was credited with the assist on Belk's goal.

The Maidens trail Nacogdoches by two points for first place in the league standings at the half-way point.

The Lady Dragons will invade the Tomato Bowl for a 7 p.m. match on Friday against Jacksonville.

“This will be a big match for us and should go along way in determining the district champion,” Maidens' head coach Kiff Wiemers said.

NOTES — The Maidens also blanked Lufkin Hudson (2-0) on Friday at Tomato Bowl...Jasmin Rodriquez and Alayna Jeffcoat scored for the Maidens, with Green getting an assist...In junior varsity action, the Maiden sub-varsity earned a 2-0 win over the Lady 'Riders Tuesday...Birdie Guitan and Kayla Santana each had a goal and an assist for Jacksonville.

    One would probably be hard pressed to find any summer youth sports camp with a more streamlined approach than was found at the Jacksonville Fightin' Maiden Basketball camp, which took place this week at the Jacksonville High School Gymnasium.

    “We just asked the young ladies for two things,” Tony Harris, Jacksonville High School head girl's basketball coach, stated on Wednesday. “First, we wanted them to have fun and secondly we wanted them to learn control — to be able to control their eyes, their body and the (opposing) defender.”
