Prep Hoops Roundup: New Summerfield boys slam Elkhart, 65-41



New Summerfield 65, Elkhart 41: ELKHART — New Summerfield held Elkhart to 14 first half points as the Hornets evened their slate at 3-3 by clubbing the Elks, 65-41. New Summerfield led 40-14 at the break before coasting to victory. Angel Marroquin led the Hornets with 16 points and Wendl Thomas pitched in 13. Also scoring in double digits for the winners were Case Wilkerson (12) and William Ramsey (10), who is a transfer from Cushing. Ramsey completed a double-double by snatching down 10 rebounds. Wilkerson and Ramsey also drained 3-pointers for the Hornets.


Bullard 55, Pine Tree 38: LONGVIEW — The Panthers of Bullard were able to chalk up their first win of the season by spanking Pine Tree, 55-38, in Longview Tuesday. Hunter Landrum fired in 15 points to spark Bullard (1-2) while Tyler Whatley added 11. Eric Barb and Landon Beckham finished with 10 apiece. Bullard will take on T.K. Gorman at 7:30 p.m. Friday at UT-Tyler's Herrington-Patriot Center.



Chapel Hill 54, Rusk 49: NEW CHAPEL HILL — The Rusk High School girls basketball team lost its first game of the season Tuesday when undefeated Chapel Hill (5-0) edged the Lady Eagles, 54-49, at Bulldog Gymnasium. The Lady Bulldogs, ranked No. 7 in Class 3A, used a huge third stanza surge that saw Chapel Hill outscore the Lady Eagles 20-9 as a springboard to victory. Rusk's Kirsten Fuller dropped in a game high 22 points and Destinee Morris drained 10. The Lady Bulldogs swept Rusk in sub-varsity play, taking the junior varsity tilt, 40-22, and the freshmen game, 34-17.


West Rusk 63, New Summerfield 13: NEW LONDON — Tierney Reddic popped in 22 points as West Rusk steamrolled New Summerfield, 63-13, Tuesday evening. The Lady Raiders are now 5-1 while the Lady Hornets slipped to 2-5.

    Most of the clubs will take part in scrimmages or playdays in late week before opening the regular season the following week.

     The summer junior golf tour schedule is now in the home stretch and Jacksonville's Cameron Brown is closing like a freight train.

    Brown played in two tournaments this week and came in third place in each, while going up against some top-caliber junior golfers from the Metroplex.

    On Monday and Tuesday, the son of Dean and Mary Carol Brown, played in a Texas Junior Golf Tour (TJGT) stop at TPC Craig Ranch in McKinney where he shot rounds of 73 and 71 to earn third place out of a field of 54 boys.

    The Rusk Rangers 14U team were scheduled to take on Malakoff Monsters Friday night in an elimination game in the Texas Teen-Age Baseball Association (TTA) state tournament in Hillsboro.

    Rusk suffered its first lost in the double-elimination event after falling to the Eagles from Mildred.

Sometimes they are very aggressive and will react to a variety of baits. At other times they become very hard to catch. I have several baits that I rely on, but some are favorites.

    But the Southland Conference (NCAA, Football Championship Series) team will return a rock-solid nucleus, including Cory Hamlett, a senior who prepped at Jacksonville High School and Rusk High School graduate John Trotter, who will also be in his final year playing for the orange squad from Huntsville.

    In filling its opening for a head girl's basketball coach, The Brook Hill School turned to Ivan Johnson, a coach that has been has achieved playoff success in TAPPS circles.

    Johnson was introduced as Brook Hill's man to lead the Lady Guard hoop charges Tuesday afternoon in a press conference that was held on campus at the Kyle Lake Athletic Center.
