The old adage that proclaimed football to be a game of inches proved to be true once again Friday night when Bosqueville eked out a 42-41 win over Alto in a Class 1A-I, Region III semi-final that took place at Tigerland Stadium on the campus of A&M Consolidated High School.
Trailing 42-41 following a 40-yard scoring reception from Zach Sturns to L'Darius Pope, Alto head coach Paul Gould called a time out to consider his choices as to whether to try to tie the game up by sending Nicolas Leon in to attempt a point after touchdown, which in all probability would have forced overtime, or to go for two and earn the victory.
Gould choose the second option.
The Yellowjackets called Jacolby Whitaker's number and Whitaker received the direct snap from center and headed around the right side where he was stopped about 36 inches short of the goal line by a Bear defender.
The stop preserved Bosqueville's single-point lead.
On Bosqueville's ensuing possession, after three big gains via the run, the Bears (10-3), the District 12-A-I runner-ups, were content to go into the victory formation for the game's final-two plays to secure the win and advance to next week's regional final where they will face either Mart or West Sabine..
The Yellowjackets end a fine season at 9-4. The Mean Sting were the runner-ups out of District 19-A-I.
Alto owned its only lead of the night at the 6:35 mark of the opening stanza when Whitaker ran in from four yards out, giving the Mean Sting a 6-0 advantage, after the PAT try was no good.
Whitaker carried 18 times for 97 yards against the Bears and scored four (4, 23, 4, 3 yards) touchdowns. He ended his final season as a 'Jacket with 1,701 yards and 30 touchdowns.
Also playing his final high school game was Sturns, the Mean Sting signal caller.
Sturns went 12-20-0— 284 yards and two touchdowns on Friday. He wrapped up the year with just over 2,900 all-purpose yards.
Grayson Gonzalez of Bosqueville scored what turned out to be the winning touchdown with 3:30 left in the game when he broke loose and scampered into the end zone untouched from 39 yards out, which made the score 42-35 in favor of the Bears.
Bear freshman running back Mathis had a huge night, rushing 26 times for 224 yards and touchdowns covering 54 and 4 yards, respectively.
Collins, the Bear quarterback, went 14-23-O — 186 yards and a touchdown and rushed 10 times for 64 yards and a score.
The win by Bosqueville avenged a loss to Alto suffered in last year's regional semi-final.
The Bears tallied 515 total yards to 428 for Alto.
Bosqueville totaled 21 first downs to the Mean Sting's 16.
