Eagle running back DJ Glenn has been picked as the Daily Progress Player of the Week for Week 2.
Glenn carried nine times for 130 yards and scored on a 42-yard touchdown scamper in the fourth quarter to seal the deal for the Eagles, who were able to earn their first victory of the year on Friday when they polished off previously undefeated Eustace, 21-0, at Eagle Stadium.
The triumph was Rusk's first of the year against two defeats.
“The win, obviously, and our offense's ability to move the ball and score I think really lifted the overall confidence level of our kids,” Rusk head coach Ted Patton said Monday. “DJ had a couple of big runs Friday and our offensive line opened up some nice lanes for him to run through. Given our youth and inexperience up front that was sure good to see.”
Glenn appears to coming into good form at this time. In the Eagles' 22-14 loss to Crockett on Sep. 6, Glenn rushed 10 times for 98 yards and scored on a 5-yard touchdown run.
Honorable Mention Performances
Connor Mebane, Bullard — The Panther quarterback carried 15 times for 159 yards and scored two touchdowns in Bullard's 38-7 whitewashing of winless Diboll. Mebane continues to be, arguably, the area' most consistent player, having made the honorable mention list in each of the last three weeks.
Anfernee Black, Alto — Black, a transfer from Jacksonville, led the Yellowjack offense in receiving with five grabs for 130 yards and the team's only touchdown in a 42-7 loss to Tenaha. The performance was Black's top effort in his 'Jacket career.
Rusk defensive unit — The “Black Wall” defense of defensive coordinator Robby May chalked up Rusk's first shutout win since Sep. 30, 2011 when the Red and Black pulverized Diboll, 53-0. The victory also came against a Eustace Bulldog squad that entered the fray averaging 27 points a game.
