Jacksonville Daily Progress
The Jacksonville Indians came very close to posting their first win of the season, but close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.
Marshall took a two-touchdown lead into the fourth quarter and then held off the hard-charging Tribesmen in earning a 35-28 decision over the visitors, in what was the last non-conference game for both units.
Marshall earned its first win of the year Friday and now stands 1-4, while the Indians slipped to 0-5.
The 0-5 start by Jacksonville is the team's worst start since the 1995 club opened the season with seven-consecutive losses.
The Mavericks win also snapped a four-game Tribe winning streak over the Mavs.
Carter McCown was on a mission, running 14 times for 117 yards and a score, and throwing for another 207 yards in the game but all for naught as the Indians ran out of time after making a run for the tying score with less than a minute remaining in the game. McCown made a crucial 15-yard run on a fourth-and-one yard to keep the final drive alive.
Operating at the Marshall 26-yard line, an incompletion and a 15-yard penalty on Jacksonville marked the ball at the 38-yard line. Facing a third-down and six-yards to go for another Indian first down with 22-seconds left, another incompletion made the game a one-play affair.
Jacksonville looked to pass but the receivers were covered up and the pass was incomplete to ice the game for the Mavs.
Mav running back, Deondre Osbourne started opening things up early with a 33-yard scamper on his first carry. Osbourne toted 19 times in the opening half for 98-yards, finishing with 166-yards in 19 carries.
The first Maverick drive ended on a Justin Hart to Marek Reyes from four-yards, and the Emanuel Acuna PAT kick was good for the 7-0 lead.
The Indians (0-5), answered back before the first quarter was over when running back, Braylon Parrish broke off-tackle, sprung outside and raced 81-yards down the left sideline. The Jacksonville PAT kick was blocked by Dontavious Boyd.
Hart stretched the one-point lead on another TD strike of 31-yards to Ashton Robinson.
Jacksonville however tied the game up later as Carter McCown threw to a wide-open Claude Franklin in the Marshall end zone.
The Indians dew even at 14-14 when Lekendrick Anderson bulled in for the PAT run.
Marshall grabbed the 21-14 halftime lead when much-faceted Jaucque Kuykendall sprinted around the right end and down the sideline from 42-yards, and the Acuna kick made it 21-14, Marshall at the break.
The Mavs controlled the ball most of the first half, holding a 244 to 165 in total yards advantage at intermission.
Kuykendall made his second TD run with 44-seconds before the end of the third quarter, The Acuna PAT boot was true for a 28-14 count going into the final stanza.
Another Maverick TD run by Kuykendall made it a 28-14 count, with a 19-yard TD run just before the quarter.
McCown got the Indians back on a roll as he found Trent Sansom for a big 23-yard completion to the Mavs one-yard line. One play later, McCown bulled in from three-yards away, and the Travis PAT kick made it a 28-21, Mav lead with 10:30 left in the game.
Kuykendall added 167-yards on 17 carries and three touchdowns.
