Alto's Whitaker run away winner of Daily Progress weekly laud

Lynch, McCown post gaudy stat lines, too

JACKSONVILLE —

 

The competition for the Daily Progress Player of the Week plaudit for this week was fierce, but a winner, and a runaway winner at that,has been selected.

Alto running back Jacolby Whitaker had his most dynamic game of the year in rushing for 247 yards on 21 carries (11.8 yards per carry) and scoring four touchdowns in the Yellowjackets' 31-14 triumph over Trinity Friday night.

The win enabled Alto to put a bow on the non-district portion of its schedule owning a 3-2 record.

Whitaker was selected as the Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine's pre-season Offensive Most Valuable Player for District 10-A-I.

In the win against the Tigers Friday, Whitaker looked liked his old self in grinding up the Trinity defense all night long.

The 5-foot-11, 205-pound senior, rushed for 2,696 yards an 42 touchdowns last season.

Whitaker is coached by Paul Gould.

 

Honorable Mention

Blake Lynch, QB,Troup — Lynch owns five offers from NCAA D-I schools and last Friday nighty he owned the Huntington Red Devils. Lynch scored two touchdowns on the ground and passed for a couple of more in piloting the Tigers to a 42-14 homecoming win over Huntington. Lynch had touchdown scampers of 88 and 74 yards and rushed for 177 yards on just four carries. His touchdown tosses covered 20 and five yards, respectively.

Carter McCown, QB, Jacksonville — McCown tried his darnedest to put his Tribesmen in the win column for the first time this year by going 18-30-1 for 207 yards and two touchdowns in his club's 35-28 loss to Marshall. He also rushed 14 times for 123 yards and a score.

Grant Hanks, QB, Brook Hill — Brook Hill came away with a thrilling 24-22 TAPPS 2-2A victory over T. K. Gorman Friday night, with Grant Hanks passing for 251 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

D. J. Glenn, RB, Rusk — This speedster had 16 scampers totaling 162 yards and scored three touchdowns in the Eagles' 47-34 victory over Brownsboro.

Malik Alley, LB, Brook Hill — For the second-straight week a member of the Guard defensive unit came away with a 10-stop night. The previous player to rack up 10 tackles was Blake Maddox.
