SCOREBOARD: Local and national sports briefs for Tuesday

JACKSONVILLE — JMS Volleyball Report: 7th grade Blue rallies to down McMichael, 2-1

NACOGDOCHES — The Jacksonville High School Middle School 7th-grade Blue volleyball team came from behind to defeat Nacogdoches McMichael 2-1 ( 22-25, 25-21, 25-22) on the road Monday night. The 7th-grade Gold were stopped by their hosts 2-0 (13-25, 9-25). In 8th-grade action the JMS Blue took McMichael to the wire before coming up just short in dropping a 2-1 (17-25, 25-18, 23-25) heart breaker. The 8th-grade Gold played competitively as well, losing 2-0 (22-25, 20-25).



 

Bullard Cross Country runs well at Van meet

VAN — Sparked by a second-place finish in the individual standings by Jacey Preston, the Bullard varsity girls cross country team was able to come away with a sixth-place finish at the Van CC Meet late last week. The Bullard boys came in 9th place, with Dylan Stegall's 34th-place finish being the top Panther time.



 

JC Spaghetti Luncheon scheduled for Oct. 20

The 12th Annual Jacksonville College Spaghetti Luncheon will take place on Sunday, Oct. 20, at the Little Cafeteria on the school campus. Dining will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. To-go orders will also be available for pick-up at the same time. Tickers are $5.00 each and can be purchased at the door. All of the JC men's and women's athletic teams will ben hand to meet and greet those in attendance.



 

 

Rangers' season ends following loss to Rays

Arlington, Texas • David Price, Evan Longoria and the Tampa Bay Rays are going to playoffs again, getting there with a victory in their final regular-season game for the second time in three years.

They needed an extra game this time.

Price threw his fourth complete game of the season, Longoria hit a two-run homer and the Rays beat the Texas Rangers 5-2 in the AL wild-card tiebreaker Monday night, the 163rd game for both teams.

    The Rusk Rangers 14U team were scheduled to take on Malakoff Monsters Friday night in an elimination game in the Texas Teen-Age Baseball Association (TTA) state tournament in Hillsboro.

    Rusk suffered its first lost in the double-elimination event after falling to the Eagles from Mildred.

    One of the main things I really look forward to in the summer is locating and catching schooling bass. Schooling bass are not always easy to catch. Sometimes they are very aggressive and will react to a variety of baits. At other times they become very hard to catch. I have several baits that I rely on, but some are favorites.

    The Sam Houston State University Bearkats will have a brand new head coach and an unfamiliar quarterback this season.

    But the Southland Conference (NCAA, Football Championship Series) team will return a rock-solid nucleus, including Cory Hamlett, a senior who prepped at Jacksonville High School and Rusk High School graduate John Trotter, who will also be in his final year playing for the orange squad from Huntsville.

    In filling its opening for a head girl's basketball coach, The Brook Hill School turned to Ivan Johnson, a coach that has been has achieved playoff success in TAPPS circles.

    Johnson was introduced as Brook Hill's man to lead the Lady Guard hoop charges Tuesday afternoon in a press conference that was held on campus at the Kyle Lake Athletic Center.

    There will we far fewer youth baseball players, coaches, family members and supporters roaming the streets of Rusk this week.

    That's because, county them, four teams from Rusk will be competing at venues around Central and East Texas in various Texas Teenage-Baseball Association state championship tournaments.
