Groesbeck quarterback Sterling Cable probably want be on the Rusk Eagles' Christmas card list this year.

Cable hurled three touchdown passes to a trio of Goat receivers and ran for another to lead Groesbeck to a 34-7 triumph over the Eagles in a District 19-3A affair that took place at Goat Stadium on Friday.

Rusk dropped to 2-7 overall, 0-3 in district with the loss and will now need to defeat Mexia by at least 15 points in next week's regular season finale in order to qualify for the playoffs.

Groesbeck ended the regular season with a 4-6, 1-3 record.

If the Eagles fail to knock off Mexia by 15 points or more next week, Groesbeck will get the final playoff berth out of the loop.

Rusk moved the ball well between the 20's, but struggled in the Red Zone, especially in the first half.

The Eagles' first drive of the night stalled at the Goat 2-yard line, with the team's second possession ending at the Groesbeck 26.

The Goats led 7-0 at halftime with the only touchdown of the opening half coming on a 46-yard touchdown reception by Cody Favors from Cable, that took place with 9:25 to go in the second quarter.

The Eagles got the football first to open the second half and immediately went to a no-huddle offense.

The new wrinkle seemed to be working as DJ Glenn picked up seven yards on Rusk's first play of the half and Drew Dorsey tallied the same on the following play, but an Eagle fumble on the next play ended Rusk's drive prematurely. Cable was Johnny-on-the-spot to secure the loose ball for the Goats.

On Groesbeck's first play from scrimmage following the Rusk turnover, the Goat's pulled a trick play out of their hat that worked to perfection.

A double reverse toss back to quarterback Cable netted the Goats a 44-yard touchdown, with Dalton Longenbaugh being on the receiving end to put the Goats up 13-0 with 11:08 to play in the third.

The Goats continued to remain in full control of things and expanded their lead to 27-0 with 7:37 to play in the game.

Rusk finally got on the scoreboard with 4:28 showing on the clock when Glenn plowed in from a yard out.

Chris Sanchez tacked on the extra point, which cut the Goat lead to 27-7.

Glenn's touchdown was the first points that the Eagles have scored in district play this season.

Glenn, Isiah Francis and Drew Dorsey led the Rusk ground attack, with Sanchez reeling several nice mid-range passes from quarterback Bryan Paddock.

Defensive leaders for the Eagles were Sean Bixler, Josh Ruiz, Austin Ballew, Jeremy Turner and Taylon Sturns.
