Rusk, Bullard, Brook Hill and Troup yet to lose in 2012

JACKSONVILLE — Area high school football teams dodged various obstacles such as playing on enemy soil and dealing with sloppy playing surfaces, and in some cases heavy rain, last Friday night and at the end of the evening, one trend continued to hold true — Rusk, Bullard, Brook Hill and Troup were able to keep their respective unblemished records intact.

The Eagles and the Tigers had little difficulty in moving to 3-0 on the year.

The Rusk defensive unit kept Eustace (1-2) on lockdown all night in logging a 45-6 win over the hometown Bulldogs.

Defensively, Rusk (3-0) has allowed just 25 points through three games.

Senior Chaston Bennett continued to make his presence known — on both offense and defense — to ignite the Eagles, who visit Athens this week.

Bennett, toted the ball 15 times for 284 yards, while crossing the goal line three times.

Defensively, Bennett led his team with 19 tackles on the night.

In Troup, the Tigers (3-0) are starting to play like a broken record and that's music to the ears of Tiger fans, no doubt.

After destroying West Rusk 40-0 in Week 1, the Maroons crushed Quitman (0-3) 41-0 on Friday in a game that was delayed an hour by inclement weather and lightning.

Troup combined for 559 yards of total offense in the tilt.

In other game highlights, Troup placekicker Gabriel Leon got the crowd on their feet when he made good on a 47-yard field goal that gave the Tigers a 37-0 lead at intermission.

Things should get tougher for Troup this week with the Tigers slated to play at old rival Arp.

Lumberjack Field in Diboll turned into a quagmire with Friday's downpours, which did more to slow down the Bullard offense that the Lumberjack defense did.

With an assist to Mother Nature, Diboll (1-2) was able to keep things respectable, in falling 14-0 to the Panthers (3-0).

The Bullard defense held Diboll to 146 total yards in pitching the shutout.

Zack Holladay paced Bullard in tackles, with nine solo stops, followed by Brent Henderson with five.

Bullard had two players finish with more than 100 yards rushing.

Henderson carried 19 times and gained 147 yards while Colton Mebane accounted for 111 yards on 12 scampers — each young man scored a touchdown.

Henderson leads his team in rushing, having picked up 251 yards on the year while scoring four touchdowns.

Mebane is not far behind, having 23 carries totaling 191 yards.

Brook Hill went to 2-0 on the year by holding off a quality Garrison (UIL, Class 2A) team by a 24-20 margin.

The Guard led 17-6 going into the final quarter, before the Bulldogs (1-2) scored two touchdowns to take the lead, 20-17, with just over six minutes to go.

Guard quarterback Will Weathers saw to it that the Guard faithful departed Herrington Stadium smiling when he connected with Chase McDermott on a 73-yard scoring play that took place with just 56 seconds showing on the clock.

Weathers rushed 23 times for 126 yards and went 11-23-0 through the air for 222 yards.

Brook Hill hits the road Friday night for the first time this year, playing at Spring Hill.

One of the main things I really look forward to in the summer is locating and catching schooling bass. Schooling bass are not always easy to catch. Sometimes they are very aggressive and will react to a variety of baits. At other times they become very hard to catch. I have several baits that I rely on, but some are favorites.
