New Summerfield qualifies handful for regionals

Parra wins a pair of firsts at area meet

SHELBYVILLE —

Four individuals plus a relay team from New Summerfield High School earned berths in the Class A, Region II Championships, to be held in Palestine later this week.

In the varsity girls division of the Class A District 20/21 Meet, staged at Shelbyville High School late last week.

Lady Hornet Alicia Perez came in fourth place in the 800M run, recording a time of 2:41.96. Also coming in fourth was Veronica Sanchez, who was clocked in a time of 14:16.15 in the 3200M run.

The Lady Hornets' 4X400M relay team (Perez,Brendy Suarez, Demondra Johnson, Tanya Suarez) also wound up fourth, posting a time of 4:46.89.

Francisco Parra won the gold medal in the varsity boys 1600M run, breaking the tape in a time of 4:54.68, which was nearly a full second better than the runner-up's time. Parra also came in first in the 3200M run. He ran a 10:31.56 in the event and won by almost 15 seconds.

Alfredo Hernandez punched his ticket to regionals by taking third in the 3200M. Hernandez was timed in 11:20.61.
