QUITMAN — Bullard's William Baker and Brent Henderson stopped Quitman's Elijah Clark as he attempted to convert a 2-point try with 53 seconds showing on the clock which enabled the Panthers to preserve a 21-20 win over the upstart Bulldogs Friday night.
Bullard led 21-7 early in the final frame before the Bulldogs mounted a full-throttle comeback attempt in the season opener for both units.
Connor Mebane proved himself at quarterback and on the defensive side.
He went 9-11 for 151 yards and two touchdowns (no interceptions), including a 52-yard scoring strike to Drake Daly in the second half. He also was Bullard's leading rusher, carrying 12 times for 66 yards.
Defensively, Mebane was credited with a fumble recovery, a forced fumble and seven tackles.
Daly and Jared Alsobrook led Bullard in tackles, with nine each, while Ryan Sloan added seven.
Caleb Hallford had a fumble recovery for the Panthers (1-0).
Henderson carried nine times for 42 yards ands burst into the end zone once for the winners.
Bullard rolled up 237 yards of total offense, with 201 yards coming on the ground.
Bullard returns to Panther Stadium for its home opener against White Oak (1-0) at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
