The Eustace Bulldogs, 2013 football squad came into Friday night’s game against Rusk undefeated, and appearing to be a to is a Class 3A power to contend with.
Rusk however picked up its first win of the year and blemished the Bulldogs perfection with a 21-0 win over Eustace, Friday night at Eagle Stadium.
Two forced fumbles by the Rusk defense in the opening two quarters favored the Eagles. On the first recovery by Morgan Johnson halted a Bulldog drive at the Rusk-19 yard line to thwart a Bulldog push.
One the ensuing Eustace possession, Rusk made the second fumble pay off.
Eagle defensive back, Austin McKinney jumped all over a fumble to set up the Eagles at the six-yard line. One play later, senior fullback, Ray Foreman rumbled up the middle from six-yards to break the scoring drought with 5:07 before intermission.
The Bulldog defense stepped up behind Zach Hughes, Shaddy Braddy, and two-way star Jesus Barcenas to hold off another fourth-down pass attempt on the final Rusk play of the opening half.
Rusk almost doubled up the score just before Chance Scott picked off a Rusk TD heave in the end zone, to keep the 7-0, Eagles lead.
Eustace plugged away upfront in the first half, running 23 times and 153 yards. No passes were attempted by the Bulldogs.
Rusk meanwhile had a 85-yard ground attack on 13 tries, and QB Chase Stanley had some tough luck with a 2-for9 and 33-yards, with the one interception for a total of 128-yards in the first half.
The second half was full of some adjustments at halftime from both coaching squads.
Rusk apparently found one key as quarterback Chase Stanley had no carries in the first half.
Stanley’s fifth carry of the game tuned into pay dirt after a 42-yard scamper and score. Stanley ended the game with five carries and 83-yards.
Chris Sanchez was good on his second of two PAT kicks and a Rusk lead 14-0 early in the final stanza.
The Rusk defenders stepped up three times with fourth-down stops in the Rusk 30-yard line.
The Eagles added on final score at three 1:28 mark of the game as DJ Glenn broke loose for a 42-yard scamper and kick good for the 21-0 final.
Eagle senior RB, Ray Foreman toted eight times for 40-yards in the game. The Eagles won the battle of total yards, 350-234.
Chance Scott intercepted the Rusk toss in the end zone to end the first half and Zack Hughes, Jesus Barcenas at LB, and gained 65-yards in 21 carries.
Other defensive standouts for Eustace included LB, Jesus Barcenas, and linemen, Abed Abuhatah, and Thomas Hyde.
Also for the Bulldogs, Steven Stine came on the second half for 8 carries 88-yards, and Keenan Hargest, a sophomore nine tries and 84-yards.
Three timely passes by Stanley aided to keep scoring drives alive with two completions to Sturns, and one to Chris Sanchez, all for first downs.
