Not too often would a basketball player with four-points play. Much less make a run for the game MVP.
The Jacksonville Indians found out the hard way that points means good basketball, however it was Tyler-Lee’s, Caleb Johnston proved that it’s the little things to win games.
The Robert E. Lee Red Raiders got a strong, 20-points from Rico Major and converted 15 of 22 free throws in the second half to lead to a 58-49, win over the Indians on Tuesday night at the REL Varsity Gymnasium.
Johnston made four final quarter free-throws, but the senior, grabbed 17 rebounds, dished out seven assists, made six steals and four blocked shots leading to the REL win.
The Indians got all nine of Raybon Riden’s team-high points in the second quarter to rally a Jacksonville comeback and a 31-23, halftime advantage. After a slow start and a 14-10, Lee lead after the opening quarter the Indians forced seven Red Raider turnovers and committed only two to aid in a second period flurry.
The Tribe guns went cold in the third period with three made free-throws before Claude Franklin and Jeremy McAnally scored back-to-back buckets as Lee took as 42-39 lead after the third stanza.
DeMontre Ragsdale scored back-to-back Jacksonville buckets before two DeMondrick Barker free throws made a last tie at 47-47.
Jack Calhoun bombed home a 3-pointer that was followed up by a Red Raider free-throw
bonanza. Lee made the next 6-of-10, making 19-of-33 from the charity stripe in the game.
The contest was highlighted with 10 lead changes, and tie scores in each quarter and seven overall before Johnston, Calhoun and Robert Pulliam sank the freebies, while Major sandwiched in a couple of reverse lay-ups to account for the deciding points in the game for Lee.
Charles Kendrick ripped down nine rebounds for the Tribe, Riden added six rebounds, five assists and three blocked shots to his nine-points.
Lee only canned two of 16 3-point tries. The tenacious Indians defense forced 22 REL turnovers, and 17 times by the Indians.
Up next for the Indians, they Tribe will travel to play in the Madisonville Tournament this weekend. First game is set against Wills Point, on Thursday.
