New Summerfield Cross-Country: Hornets perform well at Crockett Meet

Parra Leads Hornets to 2nd Place Finish; Sanchez top Finisher for Lady Hornets

New Summerfield’s’ Cross-Country teams traveled to Crockett on Wednesday for their final tune up before the District 21-A Meet on Wednesday. Cloudy and overcast conditions didn’t prevent the Hornets and Lady Hornets from strong performances across the board with athletes competing in all divisions.

Veronica Sanchez was the top finisher for the Lady Hornets who bested a district rival from Mount Enterprise. The Lady Hornets JV squad finished 3rd as a team and the Junior High girl’s featured a top 15 finisher.  Next week, the Lady Hornets will vie for a top 3 finish as a team and advance to the Region III Championship in Humble.

The Hornets missed a 2nd straight Pre-District Championship at the hand of Central Heights who finished a mere three points ahead in the final tally of team scores. Francisco Parra was the top finisher (2nd) with a time of 17:33. Alfredo Hernandez and Rafael Garcia also turned in top 10 finishes with times of 18:50 and 19:00 respectively.

Both Junior Varsity and Junior High boy’s teams also finished in 2nd as a team.

The Hornets will look to repeat as District Champions next week in the 21-A Meet.

New Summerfield will host the District 21-A Meet on Wednesday, October 23, 2013 at the New Summerfield ISD Sports Complex. Races begin at 8:30 a.m. and conclude with an evening session for Junior High beginning at 3:05.

New Summerfield cross country is under the direction of Kent Willis.
