DALLAS —

Former Troup Tiger Der'rikk Thompson had his best day as an SMU Mustang on Saturday when the Ponies outscored Temple 59-49 in an American Athletic Conference game that was played before a crowd of nearly 16,000 at Ford Stadium in Dallas.

Thompson, a 5-foot-11, 190-pound junior had nine catches for 158 yards — both career bests for Thompson, who was a first team all District 19-2A selection while at Troup — and also scored one touchdown.

His touchdown reception covered 17 yards and came at the 11:03 mark of the third quarter as SMU improved to 3-4, 2-1 with the win — Temple dropped to 1-7, 0-4 following the loss.

Thompson's longest catch was a 43-yard pass from quarterback Garrett Gilbert who passed for 538 yards and four touchdowns in the game. Gilbert was 37-53-0 via the airways.

SMU is slated to continue conference play at 11 a.m. Saturday when the Mustangs travel to Cincinnati to face the Bearcats.

NOTE: Thompson's previous top effort as a Mustang came in last year's Sheraton Hawaii Bowl when he hauled down five catches for 82 yards in the Ponies' 43-10 romp over Fresno State.
