Volleyball Roundup: Troup completes perfect district run; Bullard downs Kilgore, 3-1


Troup 3, Hawkins 0: Troup but the bow on an undefeated district run Tuesday night at Tiger Gymnasium by tossing Hawkins 3-0 (25-17, 25-12, 24-14). The Lady Tigers are now 25-12 overall after going 14-0 in league affairs. Troup is also ranked No. 15 in this week's Class 2A poll. Cheney Cover had a team-high 14 kills to lead the Lady Tigers, with Josee Ross adding 11 spikes. Dig leader was Bethany mason with 20, followed by Ross with a dozen and Paeton Nolan who pitched in 10. Carly Dyess amassed 31 assists to lead the winners. Troup will visit Gilmer for a warm-up match at 4:30 p.m. Friday and will open the playoffs late next week against an opponent to be determined. The Troup JV team also won (2-0) over the Lady Hawks.


Bullard 3, Kilgore 1: The Lady Panthers of Bullard celebrated Senior Night Tuesday by crushing Kilgore, 3-1, in District 16-3A action. Game scores were, 25-9, 25-9, 22-25, 30-28. Ashley Searcy had 17 kills, seven blocks, nine digs and five aces to fuel Bullard (22-15, 6-6). Mallory McCoy had a career-high 36 assists to compliment her four back line gems. Kenzie Fish pitched in 19 kills and four service aces while Madi Hodges came away with 22 digs and an ace on 13-of-13 serving. Haley Lombardo also had a big match for the Lady Panthers, collecting eight kills in 11 attempts. Bullard will open the playoffs next Tuesday by taking on Van at UT-Tyler. The match will get under way at 7 p.m.


Nacogdoches 3, Jacksonville 0: Nacogdoches defended its home court by cruising past Jacksonville 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-13) on Tuesday. The Maidens end the year with an 0-10 record in District 16-4A. Nacogdoches won both of the sub-varsity matches by identical 2-1 scores.

    One would probably be hard pressed to find any summer youth sports camp with a more streamlined approach than was found at the Jacksonville Fightin' Maiden Basketball camp, which took place this week at the Jacksonville High School Gymnasium.

    “We just asked the young ladies for two things,” Tony Harris, Jacksonville High School head girl's basketball coach, stated on Wednesday. “First, we wanted them to have fun and secondly we wanted them to learn control — to be able to control their eyes, their body and the (opposing) defender.”
