Daily Progress Players of the Week: QB's Hanks, McCown shine in Week 9

JACKSONVILLE —

Two of the area's top quarterbacks turned in premium efforts on Friday night and have been named as Daily Progress Players of the Week.

Brook Hill junior Grant Hanks and Jacksonville 11th-grader Carter McCown both excelled on the gridiron in Week 9.

Hanks went 13-of-27 for 233 through the air and hurled three touchdown passes, which covered 12, 63 and 72 yards, and led the Guard to a 27-14 upset of Grace Community School in TAPPS II-2A action that was played in Tyler.

The win enables the Guard to escape facing No.1-ranked Midland Christian in one of the early rounds of the state playoffs.

McCown posted some down right gaudy numbers in the Tribe's 59-55 loss to Lindale.

He rushed for 253 yards and four touchdowns (37, 17, 52 and 8 yards) and passed for 360 yards and three scores (22, 27, 34 yards).

All totaled, McCown accounted for 613 yards on the night.

Honorable Mention

Zac Sturns, QB, Alto — Sturns ran for 141 yards and three touchdowns and passed for 78 yards as Alto's Yellowjackets drilled San Augustine, 84-19.

Seth Brasher,WR, Brook Hill — Brook Hill's go-to man latched onto seven passes for 135 yards and two touchdowns last week.

Jacolby Whitaker, RB, Alto — Whitaker piled up 186 yards of rushing in 19 carries and averaged 9.8 yards per touch. He also scored four touchdowns in his team's lopsided victory.
