Prep Basketball: New Summerfield Tip-off Tournament opens Thursday

Troup girls also included in field

NEW SUMMERFIELD —



High school basketball heats up in a major as the New Summerfield Tip-Off Tournament is scheduled to get under way on Thursday morning and will run through Saturday at Hornet Gymnasium.

Eight boys teams and eight girls squads will be contesting championships in varsity boys and varsity girls divisions.

New Summerfield, the pre-season favorite to repeat as District 21-A-I champions, open play at 1 p.m Thursday by entertaining Riverdale Academy's Rebels. Riverdale is located in Coushatta, La.

The other pairing in the upper bracket will pit Martin's Mill against Tyler Chapel Hill. That first-round game will tip-off at 11:50 a.m. Thursday.

In the bottom half of the bracket, LaPoyner will tangle with Woden at 3:30 p.m, with Broaddus and Mount Pleasant Chapel Hill slated to wrap up opening day boys play with a 5:50 p.m. tilt.

The consolation bracket championship will get under way at 1 p.m. Saturday.

The boys third-place game is set for 3:30 p.m., and the boys championship game will go down at 5:50 p.m.

 

Varsity Girls

The varsity girls bracket is littered with formidable Class 3A teams this year as Troup, Tatum and White Oak are all scheduled to appear.

Girls play will get under way at 9:30 a.m. Thursday when the host Lady Hornets battle a familiar foe in Laneville.

The Lady Hornets are young this year and are 0-2 thus far, but have shown steady improvement.

Troup's Lady Tigers will take on Tatum at 10:40 a.m.

At 2:10 p.m., Riverdale's girls will play LaPoyner, followed by the final opening-round affair on the girls side which will pit Broaddus against White Oak at 4:40 p.m.

The girls consolation championship is scheduled for 11:50 a.m. Saturday, with the third-place shootout to follow at 2:20 p.m.

The girls championship game will take place at 4:40 p.m.
