High School Football Week 1: Area previews

JACKSONVILLE —

 

 

Rusk Eagles (0-1) at Crockett Bulldogs (1-0)

7:30 p.m. Friday, Monte Jack Driscoll Stadium

Coaches: Ted Patton, Rusk; Joe Kettler, Crockett

Last Week: Terrell 16, Rusk 6; Crockett 35, Lexington 34

Next Week: Eustace at Rusk; Crockett at Trinity Christian-Addison

Quick Take: The Eagles out gained the Tigers 243 to 191 total yards, put could not manage to score an offensive touchdown...Rusk's only points came on a 15-yard pic six by Jay Johnson that was the game's first score...Terrell held the Eagles four times on fourth down last week...Defensively, the Eagles performed well against the Tigers...Crockett's high-powered offense should put the Eagle defenders to the test...Look for improvement on the offensive side.

 

White Oak Roughnecks (1-0) at Bullard Panthers (1-0)

Coaches: Gerry Stanford, White Oak; Shannon Wilson, Bullard

Last Week: White Oak 39, Redwater 3; Bullard 21, Quitman 20

Next Week: Spring Hill at White Oak; Diboll at Bullard

Quick Take: William Baker and Brent Henderson stuffed a Quitman 2-point try inside the final minute to preserve the Panther win last week...With the 'Necks sniffing the Class 2A top 10, look for the Panthers to receive a tougher test this week...White Oak returns a a bevy of seniors off of a team that finished 9-3 in 2012...The 'Necks returned seven starters on each side of the ball...Connor Mebane answered the bell both offensively and on the defensive side last week...Mebane went 9-11,0 – 151 and 1 TD at QB...He also had seven tackles and an interception...Jared Alsobrook and Drake Daly led Bullard with nine tackles apiece a week ago...Hats off to the Panther defense for allowing just 36 yards passing last outing.

    There will we far fewer youth baseball players, coaches, family members and supporters roaming the streets of Rusk this week.

    That's because, county them, four teams from Rusk will be competing at venues around Central and East Texas in various Texas Teenage-Baseball Association state championship tournaments.

    One would probably be hard pressed to find any summer youth sports camp with a more streamlined approach than was found at the Jacksonville Fightin' Maiden Basketball camp, which took place this week at the Jacksonville High School Gymnasium.

    “We just asked the young ladies for two things,” Tony Harris, Jacksonville High School head girl's basketball coach, stated on Wednesday. “First, we wanted them to have fun and secondly we wanted them to learn control — to be able to control their eyes, their body and the (opposing) defender.”
