Tribe Tennis: Jacksonville splits matches in JHS Quad



Jacksonville picked up its second win of the fall season during the Jacksonville Quad on Saturday at the Frances White Tennis Complex.

Head coach David Hanna's charges clipped Van, 11-8, to pick the win.

Tribe tennis is now 2-4-1 on the year and will open District 16-4A play at 4 p.m. Tuesday by hosting John Tyler.

TheTribe did exceptionally well in singles matches versus Van.

The Jacksonville boys won four of six matches in singles play and turned in their strongest showing of the season.

Bryan De la Rosa knocked off Herrington 7-5, 6-2 while Israel Garcia stopped Muree 6-2, 6-2.

In other wins for the Tribe, Dylan Perry outlasted Pendergraft 2-6, 6-3 (6) while Juan Martinez prevailed over Davidson 5-6, 6-1 (4).

In girls singles, Jacksonville picked up three points with Ellie Day defeating Seekhieo 5-7, 6-3 (7) and Kristie Savage taking a 6-4, 6-0 straight-set decision over Attaway.

Samantha Lee also won easily, putting away Stroud 6-0, 6-2.

Athletes from Jacksonville secured four points in doubles matches also.

Day & Savage edged Seekhieo & Attaway 8-5 with Lee And Shyla Magan winning a close one (9-7) over Stroud & Pickett.

On the boys side, Perry & De La Rosa joined up to beat Moree & Pendergraft 8-5.

Chris Shoemaker & Martinez dominated over J. Herrington & Perry 8-3.

In an exhibition match, Jacksonville's Brianna Gay downed Neely 8-6.


Center 14, Jacksonville 5

In Tribe tennis's first match of the day, a strong Center squad ruled over the Tribe 14-5.

In girls singles play Day, Savage and Lee all won their respective matches.

Lee & Mireles also earned Jacksonville a point in girls doubles by taking an 8-0 verdict over S. Cassell & Chadwick.

Lexie Stickle & Christian Roper paired up in mixed doubles to give the Tribe another lopsided win (8-1) as they topped the Roughriders' Hehring & Gonzalez.

    In that newly minted poll, the Lady Jackets took command of the No. 1 spot for the first time this season.

    Alto (20-3), the undefeated District 21-A champions, displaced Beckville (29-2) from the top spot.

    Troup's Lady Tiger softball team sent its three seniors off in fine fashion Friday night by walloping Winona, 11-0, at Lady Tiger Park.

    The win locked up the District t 18-2A championship for Troup, and marked the fourth-straight season that the Lady Tigers have won the district crown.

    Martin Melchor of Jacksonville High School was voted by the District 35-4A boys soccer coaches as the circuit's Offensive Most Valuable Player.

    Melchor is the all-time leading scorer in Tribe soccer history. He will continue his academic and athletic career at Coastal Carolina University (NCAA, Division I) following his graduation from JHS later this spring.

    The Lady Panthers will take on Athens in a Class 3A, Region II bi-district best-of-three series that gets under way beginning at 6 p.m. Friday at Grand Saline High School.

    The teams will travel back to Grand Saline for a noon game on Saturday, with a Game 3 (if needed) to follow the second contest.
