Girls prep roundup: Jacksonville nips Westwood; No. 8 Lady Hornets upset by Overton

Jacksonville 45, Palestine Westwood 44:Jacksonville improved to 3-1 on the year by edging Palestine Westwood 45-44 Tuesday night at Panther Gymnasium.

Chancii Scott drained a season-high 21 points while Jasmine Parson, the Maidens' leading scorer, pushed through 13.  

Sametria Baker knocked down five points, followed by Kevie Mathis with four and DeMonica Franklin with two.

Westwood led 24-23 at the break with Jacksonville outscoring the Lady Panthers 10-8 in what turned out to be the pivotal period for the winners — each team tossed in a dozen points, respectively, in the fourth segment.

Natalie Muniz led Westwood by popping in 13 points.

Jacksonville will be taking part in the Ennis Tournament (today through Saturday).

Overton 37, No. 8 New Summerfield 31: The Lady Mustangs of Overton jumped out to a 15-6 lead after eight minutes of play and never looked back in defeating Class A-I's No. 8 ranked New Summerfield team by a 37-31 margin at Hornet Gymnasium Tuesday evening.

Overton (2-1) led 20-16 at the half and increased their advantage to seven points at the end of three periods of play.

The Lady Hornets (6-2) struggled with its shooting — NS  hit just 12 of 50 shots (24-percent) from the field, while going 2-of-20 (10-percent) from beyond the arc — especially late in the game.

Maritzza Melendez led NS in scoring by pumping in 10 points.

Cindy Medellin had nine, to go along with a team high eight rebounds, and Simone Derrett drained seven points.

Abbey Mackey topped out with 16 points for Overton.

NS will be playing in the Troup Tournament, which opens today and runs through Saturday.

Chapel Hill 44, Rusk 38: At Eagle Coliseum in Rusk Tuesday Chapel Hill thwarted a serious Rusk upset bid as the Lady Bulldogs slipped past the Lady Eagles by a final score of 44-38.

The Eagles (3-3) led 6-3 after one period, but the Lady Bulldogs (5-1) got on track in the second quarter by outscoring the lady Eagles 16-10 to take control of things.

Brandi Gouldthorpe led the Lady Bulldogs with 15 points while Kristen Fuller tossed in 18 for Rusk. Kara Huggins swished a pair of triples for the Lady Eagles.

Rusk will have the rest of the week off and will entertain Tyler Lee at 6:30 p.m. next Tuesday.
