  • 07-17-Vert. I art.JPG Harris keeps Fightin' Maiden hoops camp simple

One would probably be hard pressed to find any summer youth sports camp with a more streamlined approach than was found at the Jacksonville Fightin' Maiden Basketball camp, which took place this week at the Jacksonville High School Gymnasium.

“We just asked the young ladies for two things,” Tony Harris, Jacksonville High School head girl's basketball coach, stated on Wednesday. “First, we wanted them to have fun and secondly we wanted them to learn control — to be able to control their eyes, their body and the (opposing) defender.”

"Lord, please don't let me have a wreck."

Those were my thoughts last Friday morning as my pick-up rolled east on FM 225 towards the Nacogdoches County Exposition Center.

Never mind the hot coffee sloshing around in the cup between my legs. I was more concerned about my tall-tined co-pilot and the two monsters riding in the back seat. One of them was "Ol' Ugly," a 195 1/8-inch freak-of-a-whitetail Mike Thomas shot in Trinity County nearly 20 years ago. The other was a nasty looking non-typical Jimmy Phillips blasted in Cherokee County last season.

  • Alto.gif Alto, Cayuga appear to be 11-2A-I teams to watch for

District 11-2A-I could shake out to be a battle between Alto's defense and Cayuga's offense.

Regardless of the way it is sliced and served up, the Yellowjackets and the Wildcats appear to be the saltiest of the six-team loop.
