Jacksonville Progress

JISD special meeting

A Special meeting of the Board of Trustees of Jacksonville ISD will be held Feb. 26, 2008, beginning at 12 p.m. in the Board Room, JISD Administration Bldg., 1547 Pine Street, Jacksonville. The Board of Trustees will interview and consider hiring Champions Consulting to Conduct a search of a new athletic director/head football coach. The board will then enter into a closed session in which it will consider: A) Legal matters, student discipline and other items for closed session; B) hiring, termination/retirement, or transfer of professional personnel. The board will reconvene to open session for action (if needed) relative to the items considered during the closed session.



Early voting locations

Early voting for primary elections is through Feb. 29 at the Jacksonville Senior Citizen's Center, 300 S. Bolton St., Jacksonville, the County Clerk's Office at the Cherokee County Courthouse in Rusk and at the A. Frank Smith United Methodist Church, 103 Cooper St, Alto.



Faculty vs. students

The Jacksonville Middle School Relay For Life team is having a Faculty vs Students basketball game on Monday night, Feb. 25, at the middle school gym. Admission will be charged and all proceeds will benefit Relay For Life. A concession stand will be made available also. Please come out and enjoy this fun activity and support RFL in Cherokee County.



Semiformal Meeting

There will be a meeting about the JHS semiformal at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 25, at the JHS library. Final plans will be discussed.



Black History program

Seminary Heights Church of Christ would like to invite the community to the annual Black History program at 7 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 28, at the church, 1208 Arnold St., Jacksonville. This year’s theme is “You’ve Been Spotted.” The event will also honor five local couples who have been married for more than 50 years each — Emerson and Mattie Brown, Clifford and Mary Holman, George and Mary Thrikill, Willie and Bobby Taylor and Berry and Ruby Robinson. A Community Impact Service Award will also be given to Sarah Robinson, Asaree Ragsdale and Tyree Wells.



Healing room offered

River of Life Christian Church in Rusk has recently opened a Healing Room in which they offer prayer free of charge to anyone in need of healing. If you would like to come for prayer, the Healing Room is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday though Thursday or by appointment. Call 903-683-3132 for details.



Driver’s Safety course

The two-day AARP driver safety course will be conducted at 1 p.m. both Thursday, Feb. 28 and Friday, Feb. 29 at the First United Methodist Church, 1031 SE Loop 456, Jacksonville. To register for the course, or for additional information, call Bud Breen at 903-586-9321.



JHS Semiformal

“A Black Tie Extravaganza” Semiformal will be held from 8 to 11 p.m. Saturday, March 1, at the Jacksonville High School cafeteria. Cost is $5 per person. Guests are allowed if on the approved list. Maximum age for a guest is 21and must have proof of identification . The approved guest list will be in the JHS office with Ms. McKinney until Feb. 29.



Eastern Star cookbook Jacksonville 337 chapter of the Eastern Star has collected 550 of the best recipes from group members, family and friends and compiled then into an attractive keepsake cookbook. Books are on sale now for $10. All proceeds benefit the chapter’s benevolent projects. Call Dorothy Gumpert, 903-586-1228 to order a cookbook.



English classes

The Jacksonville Literacy Council is offering at 10 a.m. each Friday at the Literary Council office, 215 E. Commerce St., Suite 215 A in Jacksonville. The class is open to any interested person and will teach basic speaking, reading and writing in English as well as citizenship participation. Adopt a Street

The city of Jacksonville sponsored organization, Keep Jacksonville Beautiful is asking for your help in getting rid of the litter along the streets and roads. Bath and Beauty sale

The ETMC-Jacksonville Auxiliary is sponsoring a ‘Bath and Beauty’ sale, which has been rescheduled for 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday, March 6 and from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, March 7, in the Grand Lobby of the hospital.



City prayer, fellowship

The city is facing some great challenges with the announced layoff of many of our friends. Join the Jacksonville Ministerial Alliance for a morning of prayer for God’s guidance through these difficult times. All are invited. The event is from 8 to 8:30 a.m. Thursday, March 6, at the Norman Activity Center.



Quilters Guild of E-TX

The Quilters Guild of East Texas will meet at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, March 13, for a social at Pollard United Methodist Church, 3030 New Copeland Road, Tyler. The monthly meeting starts at 10 a.m. An evening meeting will be held at 7 p.m. the same day at the same location. Local quilt shops will preview new products and final preparations for the upcoming quilt show on March 28-29 will be made at both meetings. Sam Terry cancer fund

The Sam Terry cancer fund has been established in Terry’s honor at Austin Bank. The money collected will be used to fund the medication and the transportation costs of cancer patients who need help getting to and from doctor appointments. Donations may be made at any branch of Austin Bank.



JHS Career, Technology Community Training

Jacksonville High School’s Department of Career and Technology Education is asking community members interesting in learning new skills to join the Community Training Night, held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Jacksonville High School. The next class will be held Tuesday, March 4. Subject of the class will be “Introduction to MS Word.” There is a $5 registration fee for each course. Participants can call the office, 903-586-1021.
